Introduction

Last week my wife and son and I went to Joh. Jos. Prum for a wine tasting. There were people there from all over the world. Ten of us in all plus Amile Prum who led the tasting. We all sat around a large dining room table as we slowly worked our way thru a very nice selection of wines. Of course, I was familiar with the wines having had many over the years and still with many in the cellar, but to have her talk about the wines as I looked out the window to see the Mosel and the Wehlener Sonnenuhr Vineyard rising steeply on the other side was truly a bit surreal. The wines were of course stellar, but the conversation around the table was as good as any dinner party could ask for even as it was in the morning. Thank you to Mrs. Prum and also to everyone else at the tasting. We had three Americans (us), two Germans, two Israelis, and three Italians.

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 2015 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett 93 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Wow. Amazing how well these 2015's are drinking young. This was killer especially at 10:30 in the morning at the winery. Silvery gold in color. The nose has fresh pineapple at first. With air a bit of a yeasty note comes out. Also some kumquat. On the palate, this is very fresh. Slightly sweet. Some pineapple and minerals. Not a lot of development right now of course, but so delicious. Long finish.

  • 2014 Joh. Jos. Prüm Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Spätlese 91 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Silvery gold in color. The nose has apples. Nice texture. Sweet but not overtly. On the palate this has a lovely combination oif green apples and lemons. This is less big and less fruit than the other wines, but it works very well. kind of like a lightweight boxer that is still very talented.

  • 2012 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Green gold in color. The nose has lemons and a bit of petrol. A tiny bit of spritz on it. This wine is broader and starting to open up a bit. Limes on the palate. Slightly sweet. Long finish. At five years, this is starting to show well, but more time will certainly be rewarded.

  • 2009 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese 91 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

This was quite tight. I would hold or decant at this point, but patience will be rewarded. The nose has lemons and some minerals. Deep, and complex but quite tight. viscous texture. Sweet. The palate is quite tight as well. In general this is shut down right now but the quality is there. Lots of up side potential.

  • 2009 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese 94 Points

This was performing brilliantly. Silvery green gold in color. The nose shows some diesel but also some lemons and slight tropical fruits. On the palate, great texture. Tart lemonade of high quality. Great acidity. Long finish. Beautiful wine. Still young but already singing beautifully.

  • 2009 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 95 Points

Much tighter than the Graacher but the quality and purity are evident. White gold in color. The nose is quite intense. Diesel, wet rocks and lemons. On the palate, precise. Lemons. Powerful wine. Sweet and young. Needs more time.

  • 2007 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 95 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

i like the 07's for a bit early drinking relatively speaking. Light golden in color. The nose has diesel and fruit. Very elegant. On the palate minerals and some lemon comes out. Showing a nice complexity. Great texture. This is starting to show some layering but this wine is about elegance not power. No hurry but getting there and very nice now.

This was served blind. I thought it to be a 2005 Graacher Spat. Not a bad guess considering. not as big as most of the Wehlener's we tasted. 04 was a cooler year we were told. Silvery gold in color. The nose is lemony and a bit tight. On the palate, this is crisp and precise acidity. Wet stones and some slightly sweet lemon. Good finish. Very pretty wine.

Also served blind, I guessed this one correctly. I know a lot of people dissed the 03's. While I agree that they are freaks, I really liked them once they blew off the SO2. They have a tropical sort of note, but still fine acidity. Light gold in color. The nose has sweet pineapple with just a touch of simple syrup and minerals. On the palate, this is sweet ripe fruit. Not too dissimilar in qualities from the great 01 vintage but less acidity and more fruit. Of course, not as classic nor as good, but this is drinking quite well. For those who worried they would not last or mature, I think at age 14, this still has a way to go.

We finished the tasting with this, non blind. A real treat. Green/gold in color. The nose has sea air/salinity, minerals and slight lemons. So smooth on the palate with a creamy texture. Lemon chiffon. The acidity is there but its more seamless. Sweet. Sour green apples on the finish. What a pretty wine. Seems to be closing in on peak but has a long life ahead once it gets there.

What a treat to taste these wines, in this setting, with my wife and son, and the others. Thank you again.
