Flight 1 (12 Notes)

  • NV Bérêche et Fils Champagne Rive Gauche 87 Points

    France, Champagne

Not sure of the disgorgement or actual vintage in this NV cuvee. Some apple and gooseberry with good concentration and weight, but moderate complexity or elegance.

  • 1970 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Tasted double blind in a (mostly) Produtturi afternoon. Dried red cherry and dried rose petals, making it easy to identify the entire theme as Piedmont. Fully mature and moderately ripe. Very nicely balanced with moderate weight and length. Sheldon Wasserman rated this ***(of 5) in 1980, saying it has "a lot fruit, should last." Last - it has! My 3rd or 4th favorite of the day, and I think the group's #1.

  • 1971 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Tasted double blind in a (mostly) Produtturi afternoon. Red cherry, spice and floral notes also easily identifiable as Piedmont. Slightly more concentration vs 1970 in the next glass, but less balance and somewhat more firm.

  • 1996 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano 89 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Tasted double blind in a (mostly) Produtturi afternoon. In 1996 flight. This was actually in the flight twice. Half the magnum was decanted for several hours, the other half put in a different 750 ml bottle. We were unaware of this fun experiment in advance! Both had similar flavors and aromatic profiles, but completely different structural and textural character and didn't seem the same age. Both had classic red cherry, anise and floral notes. The decanted wine came across as slightly tired with modest length. The re-bottled half was very firm, less balanced, but longer. I liked them both equally.

  • 1996 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Tasted double blind in a (mostly) Produtturi afternoon, in 1996 flight. Red cherry throughout with very good balance and concentration. Very good length and textures. My favorite wine of the day, and I think the group's #2 or #3.

  • 1996 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Tasted double blind in a (mostly) Produtturi afternoon, in 1996 flight. Lighter styled red fruit but with very firm structure. Finessed with good concentration, but so firm there was little pleasure forthcoming today. Clearly needing another decade+ in the cellar. Similar to another bottle of the same wine tasted at dinner a few days ago.

  • 1999 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Pora 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Tasted double blind in a (mostly) Produtturi afternoon. Black and red cherry throughout with fresh flowers, licorice and dried herbs. On the elegant side for Barbaresco this young from a good vintage. Somewhat accessible, but still slightly burly. Upside from here.

  • 2000 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Tasted double blind in a (mostly) Produtturi afternoon. Certainly the wine that changed most from when first poured/ tasted vs several hours later. Started with sweet red cherry and sweet spice with moderate concentration and good balance. Finished with very good concentration and length, and an expanding finish. Went from "90 points" at 2 PM to "93" before it was unveiled at 3:30. Certainly upside from here.

  • 1990 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco 85 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Tasted double blind in a (mostly) Produtturi afternoon. Ripe ut fading fruit with firm structure and a drying finish. The only wine today that I didn't find exciting in some way.

  • 2006 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco 89 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Tasted double blind in a (mostly) Produtturi afternoon. Ripe and powerful red and black cherry with youthful exuberance and fairly elegant structure. Tim says this includes almost all of what typically goes into the Riserva cuvees in most vintages. Good now, with upside.

  • 2004 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Ovello 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Tasted double blind in a (mostly) Produtturi afternoon. In 2004 flight. Forward red fruit with subtle spice. Moderate grip for such a young Barbaresco, so I was surprised to see the vintage when unveiled. Some upside from here, but not lots.

  • 2004 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Asili 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Tasted double blind in a (mostly) Produtturi afternoon. In 2004 flight. Cross-section of red fruit with floral hints and big spice. Meaty and very concentrated, this was enjoyable but clearly still backward, despite many hours of air. Needs a decade+ in the cellar, very good upside.
