So a few of us got together and bought a bottle of DRC. Of course, it wasn't a Romanee-Conti or a La Tache, but well, our pockets aren't that deep. Anyway, we decided to drink some pinot around that bottle of '06 DRC Echezeaux. We had braised lamb on couscous and some nice wagyu to pair with the wines. Nothing was blind...
2014 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne Blanc de Noirs Côte de Val Vilaine
France, Champagne
Just stunning. Very pure on the nose with loads of apple and citrus. Beautiful bubbles, great acidity, loads of slate/minerality.

2009 Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Rouge Belle Dame
France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre Rouge
Notes from day 2 open (overnight in the refrigerator) Sweet red cherry, a touch of balsamic vinegar, and pomegranate. Rich on the palate, with loads of red fruit coated with sweet tobacco...fine streak of acidity keeps everything lively and a very chalky tannic finish with some bitter herbs and pith to close.

1997 Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
The best kind of funky/earthy/barnyard upon opening. Great nose follows with more secondary notes and still loads of cherry fruit. On the palate, beautifully textured and balanced. Nice finish with very soft tannin.

2006 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Opened about 4 hrs before consumption, slow ox, then spent a few hours in the glass. My first DRC, though we all had high expectations. I guess this is young, but it was also underwhelming. Beautiful nose at first, with loads of spice and ripe fruit. On the palate, excellent acidity, silky texture, but the tannin on the finish were a touch rough.
Drank alongside a '97 Faiveley Chambertin Clos-de-Beze and a '97 Roche de Bellene Chambertin, and I think everyone agreed those wines showed better. Undoubtedly an excellent wine, but...

1997 Maison Roche de Bellene Chambertin Collection Bellenum
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Seemed a bit uninteresting at first, but after about 5 hours of air, this was really singing. Very perfumed, elegant nose, with loads of soft red fruit, spice notes, and a touch of secondary. Great acidity on the palate, beautiful silky tannins on the finish.

2004 Clos Figueras Priorat Clos Figueres
Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
A touch overripe, with loads of dark chocolate and very ripe black raspberry. Very full bodied on the palate, and rather tannic. Good, but probably should have been paired with bitter dark chocolate.

2014 Thomas Pinot Noir Dundee Hills
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
The only wine we decanted, as it always seems to need it. Perhaps the softest version of the ``Thomas" nose I've seen. A touch of rose, some vanilla, soft cherry, and maybe something slightly funky, like durian or burnt rubber in the background; at least one person in our group swears this is pinotage, but anyway.
On the palate, this is beautiful. Silky, beautiful acidity and surprisingly tannic on the finish. I didn't get to see this on day 2, but I was told that the funky notes had disappeared and it was really pure.
