Flight 1 - Vintage 2003 (2 Notes)

Before the dryness fundamentalists want to shred this rich style, please educate yourself as to the meaning of "Spätlese".

    Nose: Nettles, apple and grapefruit.
Palate: creamy, weighty body, towards sweet in a good way, honey melon, ripe gapefruit and lemon, a touch of nutmeg, almost a botrytis-note there, layered, minerality and citrus acidity linger in the length, rescuing the mouth from the sweetness. But it takes about an hour after opening to reach its max !

Very enjoyable lemonade for little money: insane qpr ! The reason I don't give a 93 is because I want to have what's left for myself. Can’t stop sipping. Two people at this bottle and it’s gone before the other guests arrive.

Remark: corks and hygiene seem to be a slight problem with the older vintages by this vintner ☺ .

Addendum after last glass: make that 90 instead. A bit too unprecise for more. I agree, also, that corks seem to be a consistent problem with the older vintages here, see the other wine linked to below.

    Original Note: 91
Just a tad less weight, funk and complexity and a bit more elegant than their 2003 Kinheimer Rosenberg Riesling Spätlese which I therefore grant one up on this. Otherwise very similar, so please read my note over there. Qpr monster.

Flight 2 - Vintage 2015 (2 Notes)

  • 2015 Alfred Merkelbach Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese 91 Points

I had to repost this TN because the wine decidedly improved by day 3 when all its parts came together, lime and minerality came out more strongly from behind the grapefruit and the future potential announces itself. Initially the (now well integrated) subtle diesel stuck out and there was still some subtle residual CO2.
Compared to the 2003 which I had just before this, the fruit is going towards quince and more strongly into grapefruit.

Surprisingly, this one was best on day 1 when I was inclined to vote for a 93. I'll see about that with my next bottle. Pineappple, honeymelon and lime acidity, the latter nicely dominating the mineral length as usual and counterpointing the sweetness. A touch of diesel so tiny that even I love it. Initially still some subtle residual CO2. Layered, probably lots of potential. Solist, IMO.
