[Mag] Praline, marzipan, and almond initially on the nose. Palate has rich, bready, and nutty flavors, all cut with a steely metallic minerality. Salted caramel. Pleasant toast. Amazing effervescence. Deep and immensely flavorful.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Ethereal nose. Echinacea, herbal, pine, mushroom. This all sounds like a tertiary old-ass Burgundy, but this is actually very fresh and very pretty with blue and white florals. Earl grey tea and blueberry. The palate has sweet red and black cherry, even blackberry fruit is still lively. Pine, tar, blueberry. Traces of smoke throughout. Not a novelty for being old and good - this is spectacular however you look at it. Cant imagine they are all like this, must have lucked into a really great bottle.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Highly elegant nose that features wilting roses and and sous bois with mild tobacco on top. Big spice emerges with more air. Ferns, blood, iron. Palate has sweet and delicate red berry fruit. Can imagine this being called old Barolo with that certain tertiary soil and spice. Still very pleasurable drinking.
Gorgeous crackling nose with gunpowder, spice, and some saline off the top. White florals. The reduction here is reminiscent of the Coche style. Developed and showing intriguing mint over a cheesy note. Still supremely fresh on the palate. Very good, but as it warms and opens it shows somewhat heavy and 'sticky' when compared to the '99 Criots, which, in fairness, was a total laser.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Nose is reading young initially with lacquered black cherry. Picking up more herbal rusticity with air. Young. Sappy. Chocolate. Some called it a 'bistro' style of Burgundy in that it was still very good if missing another layer of complexity right now.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
More fruity on the nose but also has a pleasant leafiness and soil that the '90'does not. Very comparable to the '01 Beaux Monts. Good wood hanging on to keep it youthful and sexy. Striking and intense on the palate. Less expression than recalled.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Initially quiet and missing the same immediate expression the Beaux Monts and even Clos Voigeoys had... Coming back after more air there is a brooding hoisin and cherry leaf in addition to youthful steminess on the nose. In the mouth this wine is dense with dark fruit and earth. This is a serious bottle. Thanks guys.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Have heard a number of heated corked-not-corked arguments before, but nothing quite as controversial as this. There is a sensational wine laying underneath this very faint cork taint. Red cherry, blueberry, and vosne spice is managing to break the surface, but alas the cork taint cannot be denied. So close, and honestly still pretty drinkable.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Nicely maturing, maybe a touch reductive, red cherry. A bit of wood varnish still holding on. Lots of sous bois, a touch of brett, loads of spice. Showing pleasant development with more air: hint of farm. Still great.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Young, fresh, a touch woody. Stalky and steamy, the DRC comparison is quite obvious on this bottle. Woody, but very flavorful and sexy. Fruit is still slightly tight, but this is very fresh and has great acid. Really enjoyed this.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Nose has light honey over white flowers and white rubber. A certain stalkiness. Palate is delicate up front and crescendos into a rich Chardonnay mouthful. Textured and mouth coating. Cool spearmint. Weightless palate that delivers big power. Laser focus and precision. Again, this is a special and unique bottle.
Soft caramel and buttered nose with green apple and trace salinity. Straddling a beautiful line that is nicely summed up by green caramel apple. On the palate good effervescence drives developed pear fruit. Good acid still. Somewhat oxidative towards the end. Really nice brioche. Consistently love CDC at all ages and vintages, and have been looking for an '88 for a while now. Thank you Tim!
Diesel, oily, ginger, pineapple, lacquered. High alcohol. Hard to figure out... have only experienced a handful of these wines before, and certainly never this old, and still can't quite explain. Smoke in here too. Very interesting baking spices. Ian described these as 'wacko' wines. Pleasurable and interesting drinking.
Dusty concrete, clay, ceramic, cool raspberry and cranberry. Hard to describe, perhaps was expecting more. Palate is piercing and acidic. Finish is stunted. Have never had this before, and maybe it's too far along in the evening, but this isn't giving up much right now. Stewed. Hopefully just an odd bottle. The '89 came along and absolutely smoked this.
Expansive and layered bouquet of flowers, smoked meats, and cracked black pepper. Ripe black cherry. Campfire and smoke. Deep and rich and overall quite youthful. Wow this was fantastic. Smoked the '83 tonight. Thank you very much Bill for two more outrageous wines.
