Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 1999 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc 85 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

2 halves, consistent notes. Well, who’d have thought it, an advanced/poxed DDC Blanc. Ho hum. Deep gold. Quite rich, waxy lanolin nose with a slightly bruised apple note. Quite broad on the attack. Evolved. Broadness leads through to a short finish. Falls apart in glass. ***87 to ** 82 with air. I’ll split the difference.

  • 1999 Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux

Light gold. Far fresher and grassier on the nose. Lovely line and texture, quite fat/chewy without being flabby. Deceptively (un)weighty with good line. Several steps up from the DDC. Nose shows a little more exotically with air. ****

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 1999 Roc de Cambes 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Côtes de Bourg

Really strong nose of roast beef crisps initially though that dissipates somewhat. Sweeter fruited on the attack. Nice fruit here. Resolved but with some tannin starting to poke through on the end as it opens up. Very decent. ***1/2

  • 1999 Château La Croix de St. Georges 90 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Georges-St. Émilion

Nicely rich, plummy nose with a touch of development. A savoury element too. Still some chew. Very decent. ***1/2

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 1999 Château Clinet Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Slightly muddy, diffuse nose. Slightly stewed element to the fruit. Seems a lot more evolved than it should do. Hope this isn’t representative. Bad storage?

  • 1999 Château La Conseillante 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Bright, quite pure-fruited nose. Cherry, raspberry and mulberry. Nicely focused on the attack. Bright. Elegant. Burgundian aromatics. Holds nicely through the evening. ****

Flight 4 (2 Notes)

  • 1999 Domaine de Chevalier 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Double decanted 12hrs. Lovely sweet-fruited nose with typical Graves character. Mellow on palate. Quite bright, slightly shrill finish, flattens out rather. Ok, but somewhat lightweight. ***1/2

  • 1999 Château La Tour Haut-Brion 85 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Very exotic, lifted, a touch of bruised apple too. There’s an apple juice element to the palate too. Hmm. Nose comes and goes a bit between apple juice and high-toned red fruit. All a bit volatile and disjointed for me. **1/2

Flight 5 (2 Notes)

  • 1999 Château Palmer 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Quite dense, dark fruit. A slight dustiness to the top notes. A rich, slightly savoury dark fruitedness. Holds and evolved well in the glass. Plenty of substance and interest here. ***(*1/2)

  • 1999 Château Margaux 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

A little lighter and more red fruited than the Palmer. Similar style to the Conseillante but with denser fruit here. Very floral. Gardenia. Acidity rather than tannin. This for tonight, the Palmer for the future. ****1/2

Flight 6 (2 Notes)

  • 1999 Château Léoville Barton 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Quite dark. Something woody here. Savoury, cedary, but I don’t think it’s corked. Rather surly and unlovely though. Some dense red fruit at its core. Interest but not pleasure. ***

  • 1999 Château Léoville Poyferré 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Double decanted 3 1/2 hrs. Rounded. Quite plush. Sweet fruited in the red spectrum. Reasonably balanced with a slight shrillness on the finish. A clear crowd pleaser. This is very drinkable and based on this evening’s showing, outperforms the vintage. Drinking now. ****

Flight 7 (2 Notes)

  • 1999 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

This was a confected mess a dozen years ago, but has calmed down now. Some evolution. A lot tastier on the palate but a little angular and ultimately a little lightweight. Develops an unfortunate nose of rubber. There are things to like and things that don’t convince. Mid ***

  • 1999 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

A touch of PB mocha. Lighter, red fruited. Also a touch shrill on the finish. Quite pretty if a little inconsequential. Just about pulls through to ***1/2

Flight 8 (1 Note)

  • 1999 Château Guiraud Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Deep amber. Really gorgeous colour. It’s sweet. Lip smackingly so. A slightly woody edge to the medicinal botrytis notes. Corkiness comes through on the palate. Shame.
