Introduction

A very nice restaurant with an expansive wine cellar, lots of gems at no price, good food, good service, good friends.

Theme of the night: Burgundy

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2008 Domaine Marc Morey & Fils Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Soft lime blossom nose and an expressive palate with precise and expanding citrus and apple aromas as well as wet slate minerality. Still young and fresh (others found the acidity too dominant, not me though). Medium+ flavor intensity, medium complexity, medium finish. Drinks well today (30 mins of air) but the last sips (after three hours in the glass) showed that the wine will certainly benefit from further ageing. The wine gained weight and depth with further aromas popping up (dough, yeast, butter, salt, among others) and I the acidity will be better integrated. My wine of the night.

  • 2005 Domaine Marc Morey & Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru En Virondot 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Delicate smoke/ash notes on the nose. Slightly sweet and ripe fruit, quince, some honey aromas on the palate with a slightly salty mineral frame. Very smooth and round but not as dense and deep as the 2008 Les Pucelles drank alongside. Medium- finish only. Good but not exceptional. No extensive decant needed (30 minutes enough). I don’t believe the wine has the acidity to age for much longer.

  • 2002 Gérard Raphet Charmes-Chambertin 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Expressive Syrah-like full power meat, bacon fat, dark fruit nose with some wet earth/forest floor. On the palate additionally sweet strawberries, darker red fruits and traces of dark chocolate along with some forest floor and slight leader aromas. Smooth but at times wild tannins, well integrated acidity, medium+ finish, good concentration but not yet perfectly balanced. A good, fine wine with good grades on the aromatic complexity and lower grades on harmony. I guess there is more to come in the future. If you drink it today I would decant it for at least 1.5-2 hours (became better integrated with time).

  • 2007 Pierre Damoy Chapelle-Chambertin 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru

Promising nose dominated by secondary aromas - almost Bordeaux like with leather, earth, some stable, tobacco. On the palate sweet strawberries, light coke notes, at times almost sparkling. Medium weight, slightly lean, well integrated acidity, medium strawberry driven finish. While it had not the power and concentration of the Raphet Charmes-Chambertin 2002 drank alongside, he won with better harmony and finesse. Became smoother and sweeter with one hour in the glass, hence give it some air.

  • 2002 Gérard Raphet Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Rather muted nose with coke scents and some red fruit. Initially (after 2h of slow-ox) not ready to drink with edgy tannins and a below average balance. But became rounder and more elegant by the minute with an attractive spiciness, red fruit and dark chocolate hints and a good concentration on the palate. Clearly to young to drink. This needs several more years and/or a long 3h+ decant. Would certainly showed better with a proper decant.

  • 2004 Pierre Damoy Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Coke, dark red fruit ans earthy nose. Needed one hour in the glass to soften and integrate and show a sweet red fruit, strawberry driven palate with sous bois and some meaty notes. A treat to drink and overall best red wine tonight thanks to the best harmony and balance paired with complexity and precision. 2 or better 3 hours of air are needed.

  • 1999 Pierre Damoy Chambertin 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

This was the darkest and most powerful wine in the line-up with an almost Bordeaux-like structure but a clear sous bois Pinot nose. Dark and red fruit palate, meaty tones, earth scents. Medium++ intensity, soft round tannins. Too bad we didn’t decant the wine. It got better by the minute ans I’m sure that after two, three hours in the glass that would have been the winner of the night. Without the decant and only 45+ minutes of drinking time it remained wild and at times unbalanced.
