Tonight's theme was Barolo & Barbaresco. Wines were tasted blind in flights of 3, and ranked according to favorite. Wines are listed in order of group favorite.

• 2013 Massolino Barolo Margheria

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

  Tasted blind. A little menthol, spice, and tar on the nose. Light and pretty body with dried flowers, potpourri and a soft, pretty palate. Light-to-medium acid with fine tannins on the lengthy finish. Beautiful.

• 2012 Damilano Barolo Cannubi

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

  Tasted blind. Roses, leather, and nice wood on the nose. Dark cherry fruit on the palate mingles with leather and tobacco. Lengthy, persistent finish with medium, grippy, tannins.

• 2013 Vietti Barolo Brunate

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

  Tasted blind. Soft on the palate, lighter bodied with lots of wood spice, structure, and drying tannin. Very nice, but really tight right now; needs lots of time.

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

  Tasted blind. Intense nose of spice, menthol, oak, red sweet fruit, and some floral notes. Drying, astringent tannins on the finish. Highly structured, with lean fruit notes of cranberry and tart cherry.

  Tasted blind. Lovely, pretty nose with lots of sweet red fruit. Strawberry, cherry, and rose petals on the palate. Nicely balanced with softer tannins.

• 2013 Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Grésy Barbaresco Martinenga

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

  Tasted blind. Roses, tar, wood spice on the nose. More feminine nose. Red cherry, cola, spicebox, and potpourri on the palate. A bit astringent on the finish, with fine, drying tannins.

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

  Tasted blind. Pretty nose, lots of spice and sweet cherry. Soft on the palate, but quite rich and juicy. Finishes with fine tannin. Big, but beautiful, wine.

  Tasted blind. Dark cherry fruit, floral notes, and spice. Medium-plus weight, fine tannin, nice finish.

• 2013 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato

  Tasted blind. Cinnamon and rose petal on the nose. Lighter body, with pure red cherry and strawberry fruit. Medium fine-tannins on the finish. Elevated acid; I wonder if we got a slightly off bottle? I still liked it.

  Tasted blind. Beautiful wine; soft, pretty and lush, with soft, fine tannins on the finish.

  Tasted blind. Lots of oak and smoke on the nose. Sweet dark red fruit, spice, and sour cherry on the palate. Drying tannins.

  Tasted blind. High toned nose. Medium body, a bit simple and astringent. Least favorite of the flight.
