Introduction

What a lovely way to spend a summer evening than to drink some good wines while eating great food in a wonderful garden setting. Hats off to Tracy and her green thumb. My wine of the night would have to be either 2006 Taittinger Comtes or 2001 Suduiraut. If you can drink both of those in the same night, consider yourself lucky, and wisely overlook some of the crappier wines that people brought with good intentions (including me).

  • 2012 Brick House Pinot Noir Evelyn's 91 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge

Pop and pour, this was style tasty in a big forward Oregon style. The fruit is fresh, flashy and exciting. Cherry cola, spice and vanilla. Hopefully this evolves into a nuanced intriguing wine in a few years.

  • 2002 Matrot-Wittersheim Volnay 1er Cru Santenots

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Immediately upon opening, this wine clearly smelled corked by 4 non-amateur wine drinkers. However, 1+ hours later, it no longer smelled corked. It didn't smell great, it seemed to be a rather tired elderly burg, but it was at least drinkable and not flawed. I believe there are certain volatile compounds that are similar to cork smell but not the same, and they sometimes will blow off the wine, like the funk of an old Bordeaux or CDP will sometimes do. Unfortunatley, when we smell a wine like this, we usually dump it and move along.

  • 2005 Jean-Pierre Guyon Nuits St. Georges Les Herbues 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges

This seemed to be a restrained classic red burgundy, mellow with wet rocks, beef blood and a little red fruit.

  • 1995 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

When a local merchant had these for $20, I only bought one, and for years have wished that I'd bought more. Well, this bottle made me ok with buying just the one. To be fair, it was slightly oxidative 6 years ago, so no big surprise that this wine is in a queer spot right now. This was really tired and a bit odd. However, one gentleman was really impressed by it, and I do not discount his opinion. Unscored, better in 2012.

  • 1992 Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District 88 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

This is yet another napa cab from a good producer that should have held up but is falling apart, or at least not nowhere near what you hope to drink when you open a bottle like this. Although there have been some AMAZING bottles, I have been overall disappointed with Napa cab past 15 years old. Interestingly, it seems the bottles from the 80's have held up well, but the 90's have not aged well. This bottle had a whiff of nuanced complex fruit on the nose, but the palate was a big let down. No complexity on the palate, but not entirely dead either, just banal. 88 based on the semi-intriguing nose and a palate that was acceptable in a $12 bottle way.

  • 2009 Domaine de la Mordorée Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de la Reine des Bois

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

I think ROCKNROLLER and I were in agreement when we drank this. All I get here is anise and heat. Is this in a dumb phase? I would love to be wrong but I don't see wines like this ever turning the corner.

  • 2012 Turley Zinfandel Cedarman 88 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

I am ok with Turley and their style, and I did not think a whole lot of this wine. There was a lovely beef blood smell on the nose, but not much else. The palate was slightly hollow, suggesting that this wine has not aged well. Furthermore, my records indicate that this didn't show well 3 years ago, so maybe Turley swung and missed with this wine/vintage.
