Introduction

At the '95/'96 Dinner, we hatched the idea that we could get a bunch of Champagne representatives together to pour their wines for us. We would pay them back by opening some grand cru burgs and maybe some geeky older champagnes. Somehow, the plan actually came together, and we had about 7 houses pouring champagne.

Flight 1 - House Champagnes (8 Notes)

These are among the Champagnes poured by the houses. I didn't write notes on the Ruinart wines that were poured, and the Ace of Spades Rose.

Flight 2 - Champagnes we brought (8 Notes)

The second flight consisted of Champagnes people not associated with houses had brought to Casa Gill.

Flight 3 - Grand Cru Burgs (10 Notes)

A bunch of Grand Cru Burgundies brought to Casa Gill.

  • 1999 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Slow ox for 2 hrs. Huh, maybe the last btl I had wasn't so representative. This had less secondary on the nose (more pure hard candy, no tobacco), and was almost black fruited. Seemed rather extracted on the palate, and also was quite hard with intense tannic structure. Rather a bruiser of a wine. This btl seemed like it needed more time.

  • 1978 Bonneau du Martray Corton

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Yum. Wet earth, raspberry, and maybe a touch of oxidation on the nose. Rasberry and leather and loads of secondary on the palate. Wonderful, attenuated tannin on the very Corton finish.

  • 1993 Jean-Pierre Mugneret Echezeaux

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

One of the highlights of the night. Beautiful Vosne spiced red fruit and a touch of tobacco and leather on the nose. On the palate, kicking acidity and soft tannin.

  • 1999 Faiveley Corton-Clos des Cortons Faiveley

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

This btl seemed oxidized to me, so I will reserve judgement. Some nice secondary and good red fruit, with ok acidity on the palate, but still very rustic tannin on the finish.

  • 2015 Faiveley Corton-Clos des Cortons Faiveley

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Fantastic and utterly charming. Gorgeous red fruit and spice mix on the nose. Great acidity and fruit on the palate. Rustic tannin on the finish, but not distracting given the fruit.

  • 1991 Frederic Esmonin Griotte-Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

Sadly, fairly oxidized. Some wet earth hanging around, but rather flat on the palate. Oh well.

  • 1995 Domaine Ponsot Griotte-Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

Not in the same league as the 96 Clos de la Roche we had in August...maybe oxidized, and certainly not showing very much.

  • 2005 Louis Jadot Clos de la Roche

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Seems like it has potential, but this is a typical hard 2005. Loads of red fruit on the nose, but the tannin is still so hard on the finish, and it kind of mars the palate. Not really elegant. Maybe this needs a lot more time?

  • 2001 Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

2 hrs slow ox. Nothing like the 97 I opened a while ago. Seemed a bit boring and flat..probably slightly oxidized.

  • 2001 Maison Bertrand Ambroise Corton-Le Rognet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

From Magnum. One of the, imo, 4 serious red wines of the night. Beautiful Corton: earth and hard red candied nose, and a nice mix of primary and secondary. On the palate, excellent acidity and a nice mix of leather, earth and red fruit. Still some rustic tannin on the finish, but fairly soft. Very nice.

Closing

The Burgundies were, as a whole, very disappointing. There were some real champagne surprises for me, like the Piper Cuvee Rare.
