Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2016 Jean-Paul & Benoit Droin Chablis

    France, Burgundy, Chablis

From vines averaging 35 yrs of age grown in "...generally shallow soils. The subsoil alternates between gray marl & limestone beds sometimes very rich in fossils of Exogyra virgula, small comma-shaped oyster characteristic of the middle & upper kimmeridgian marls." Apparently put through malolactic.

    N: Minerals (gunflint?) atop lemons

P: Med body; RNDISH entry with LOVELY, almost swtish frt counterbalanced by an acidity which call the shots into the LONG, TANGY/swt (70:30) finish with an OCCASIONAL *hint* of very, VERY slight bitterness. For now & through '22 with 6 mos or so of improvement poss? Impressive! My EXC-, poss EXC-/EXC. 89-91 Vinous (Tanzer) & 88-90 WA. [This vendor's $22.95 is $2 < the lower of wine-searcher's 2, VERY skewed current entries.]

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

N: Lemons with notes of mushrooms, poss sandalwood

P: LM, poss Med, body; Very NICE frt met by FIRMING acidity which fairly seamlessly evolves into a LONG, very, VERY slightly puckerish finish with hints of swtness. DESERVES/needs through '19, then drinking through '23? For lovers of high acidity! My EXC-/EXC. 15.5/20 Jancis Robinson, 87-90 pts Burghound, & 85 Decanter World Wine Awards. [This vendor's $64.95 puts it @ the bottom of wine-searcher's TOP quartile.]

N: Closed; Lemons with toasty undertones?

LOVELY stuff for NOW & through 21! My EXC-/EXC. 90 pts John Gilman. [This vendor's $33.95 is $4 < the lower of wine-searcher's 2 current postings.]

  • 2017 Paul Pernot et ses Fils Puligny-Montrachet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet

N: Slightly closed; Pineapple atop toast? Intensity lurking?

P: Med body; RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish oak/frt firmed by a tangy acidity which is the face of the wine into & through the LONG, tangy finish with hints of upcoming (honied?) swtness. Tight now, NEEDS through '19, then drinking for 3-4 yrs more. 13.5% ABV; My EXC-/EXC. 88-91 pts Vinous (Tanzer). [This vendor's $56.95 puts it in the top of the 2nd 1/2 of wine-searcher's postings.]

  • 2017 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet

From vines planted between 1960 & 1989 in the brown clay-limestone soils of the SE facing En Journoblot, La Bergerie, Les Voillenots Dessus, Voillenot Dessous, Masures, Les Essarts, & Pot Bois plots which are spread across the entire AOC; “Our winemaking methods are traditional: hand-picking, settling, fermentation using natural yeasts, aging in oak barrels (0-30% new oak, depending on the appellation), fining, & light filtration. White wines are bottled after one year of maturation.”

N: Slightly closed; Minerals atop pineapples, with poss undertones of honey? Intensity lurking?

P: MF body; RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish oak/frt braced by an acidity which evolves into a LONG, tangy/swt (55:45) finish. Delightfully done for now & through '22, poss longer. My EXC-/EXC. 17/20 pts & "Quite Good Value" from Jancis Robinson, and 90 pts WS. [This vendor's $58.95 is now a STRIKING $15 < wine-searcher's only current entry!]

  • 2016 Domaine du Chateau de Meursault Chardonnay Bourgogne Blanc Clos du Château

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc

Grapes "from an E exposure, 8 Ha plot of clay-limestone & gravel soils situated within the premises of Château. The harvest is followed by a gentle & progressive pressing, which allows selection of only the richest juices. After a static clarification, the grape musts are put into oak barrels to start their alcoholic fermentation. Aging is for 15-19 mos on the fine lees in new oak barrels (35%), in oak barrels of 1-2 yrs, & in s/s vats."

N: Pineapple, poss apple, with notes of toast; Intensity lurking?

P: Med body; RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish frt counterbalanced by a lovely acidity which fairly seamlessly transitions into a very LONG, OCCASIONALLY very, VERY slightly bitterish finish with a tangy/swtness. DESERVES through '19, then drinking into, if not through, '23. My EXC-/EXC. 88 pts Jasper Morris ("Burgundy Report") & 86 Burghound. [This vendor's $39.95 is now $10 < the lowest of wine-searcher's *incredibly* skewed listings.]
