Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2017 Kumeu River Chardonnay Village 89 Points

New Zealand, North Island, Auckland, Kumeu

Nose: The nose is clean, fresh, and balanced with pears, vanilla beans, red apples, creams, yellow florals, and some ginger notes. The balance is impeccable, but the nose does lack a little bit of depth.

Taste: Medium+ bodied with medium+ acidity. The feel has some density to it, but it isn't too big with the acidity showing a crisp quality. The balance of the nose carries through to the feel with pears, vanilla beans, red apples, creams, saline, and ginger.

Overall: This is a wonderful introduction-level Chardonnay from Kumeu River. It shows off pretty and fresh fruits with excellent balance and good depth.

  • 2017 Kumeu River Chardonnay Hunting Hill 93 Points

New Zealand, North Island, Auckland, Kumeu

Nose: The nose is fresh and electric, filled with nectarines, white peaches, limes, meyer lemons, ginger, red apples, white florals, mineral tones, and a touch of matchstick. There is a lot of complexity and balance to the nose with a good bit of depth to boot.

Taste: Medium+ bodied with high acidity. The acidity is crisp and refreshing with the feel showing off a refined sensibility along with meyer lemons, red apples, mineral tones, limes, ginger, white peaches, and some matchstick notes.

Overall: This is a wonderful Chardonnay that feels like it has to room to grow. Right now, it shows off a lot of freshness and lift with good depth and balance. The acid still has some sting to it and the tones could meld together a little bit more. But, that is quibbling as this a great wine that provides joy now and easily has the ability to provide more joy down the road.

Nose: The nose is bright and lively with strawberries, red fruits, plum, raspberries, and rose petals. The nose is fragrant, but it lacks some depth and the tones are a bit simple.

Taste: Medium bodied with fresh, medium+ acidity and medium tannins that are a little coarse. The feel is balanced and light with strawberries, red fruits, plums, and raspberries.

  • 2015 Kumeu River Pinot Noir Hunting Hill 91 Points

New Zealand, North Island, Auckland, Kumeu

Nose: There is a bit of reduction immediately on the nose, but with some swirling it pulls back into dark red cherries, raspberries, violets, roses, earth tones, plums, dark red berries, and a touch of tobacco. There is excellent complexity, but it does lack a slight bit of depth.

Taste: Medium bodied with tart, medium+ acidity and chewy, medium+ tannins. The feel is well balanced and lithe with dark red cherries, raspberries, violets, earth tones, plums, and tobacco.

Overall: This is an excellent, though quite young, Pinot Noir. There is good complexity and balance with a sour side to the red fruits. It does need some air right now, but it will be better in 3-5 years.
