Introduction

We gathered as much of our immediate family together as possible to celebrate my Mom and Dad's 60th Anniversary. They wanted to do it here, so that's what we did. It was a wonderful day of stories and memories. The wines did their part to make a memeorable day even more wonderful.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • NV Bérêche et Fils Champagne Brut Réserve 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Light golden color. Drank 2 glasses over an hour. This was a particularly delightful bottle of Bereche and was consistent with some of the best I've had over the last year. Again, very fresh and clean, with apple, bread, excellent minerality, bold yet very refined, yeast and a tight bead. 92+pts.

  • 2013 Shafer Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch 92 Points

USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

Light gold color. Drank a glass plus over 45 minutes. Drinking very well again. This bottle showed a lot of toasted barrel and gunflint notes along with a good dose of spice mixed in with the pear and golden fruits. A bit honeyed and layered; the fruit is very nice, tangy with an almost sweet essence to it along with good length. Always a classy wine. 92 or better.

  • 2015 Markus Molitor Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett (Golden Capsule) 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Light gold color. Small glass over an hour. I opened this for guests and didn't really drink much, but I poured a glass and checked in periodically. Very ripe and tropical on the nose, exotic fruits with ripe apple and hints of fruit skins , white blossoms. The palate is round and delicious, tropical, ripe pineapple, wet stones, orchard fruit, a hint of petrol. Rather sweet wine and consistent with the gold capsule from Molitor.

  • 1985 Château Kirwan 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Medium brick red color with a 5mm clear margin. PNP; drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes plus. This started out pretty musty from its slumber, showing some questionable dank notes that raised the eyebrows initially. After about 10 to 15 minutes of swirling and glass time, this started to come around. Even at that, it was much better after 30 minutes of air and it held up if not got better after that. This was a much better bottle than we experienced previously. That bottle just didn't really evolve much over an hour. Dried red berries, shaved truffle, forest floor, alnd a perfume emerges over time. The Deeply earthy, red fruits, light medium bodied, moderate round tannins remain. This is one of those old wines that I have such an appreciation for. Not a blockbuster, but so pleasurable in many ways. Very good with a variety of cheeses as well as standing on its own. Give this some love and air and I think you might be very pleased. 91(+?)pts, and I think I enjoyed it even more than that.

  • 2008 Dom Pérignon Champagne 96 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank 2 glasses over an hour. Opened this to toast my Mom and Dad on their 60th Anniversary. A very worthy wine to celebrate the occasion. I think my parents were thoroughly enamoured by this wine. Another brilliant bottle that singing from the start. Very toasty, oodles of ocean air, almond paste, pear, brioche, medium full bodied, feels so airy, brisk minerality and very long. Geez I love all that fresh ocean air on the palate too. Love it.

  • 2010 Inglenook Rubicon 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

Very dark purple/red color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes. Served this with the main course of Beef Wellington and it was a very good match. Lots of dark fruits, black currant, dark berries, gravel, smoke, full bodied, good depth, polished dusty tannins and a caressing moth feel. Very good and in a prime drinking window, though I think this still has upside. 93(+)pts.
