Private apt in NYC

Introduction

This was one of the better put together wine dinners that I've attended. I really appreciated the special touch of having rented an apt and giving it all a bit more personal feel. Also fun to get to try the food from the estate chef. Wine was very nice and well and very fun to get to try some of the older stuff all out of large format.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2011 Château Troplong Mondot

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

From a mag. This drank much better than I was expecting it to. It's definitely very young and not really in drinking window, but it was more accessible than I expected. I think it was the level of balance it had already achieved. Some spice, black fruits, just a hint of green pepper but I enjoyed that.

  • 2009 Château Troplong Mondot

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Out of double mag. This was prob drinking the youngest of the set (which makes sense since quite young and also with the larger format). This is a bit more alcoholic and ripe (for a Bordeaux). Lots of red and black fruits. It's interesting though and I imagine it will come into itself with some more time.

  • 2005 Château Troplong Mondot

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

From a mag. Back into the more balanced spot. Also very young though. This one was maybe the least expressive of the group. A bit more muted. A hint of green towards the end. I wouldn't be surprised if this wine ended up being the best of the bunch with more time though. There's something lurking there.

  • 1996 Château Troplong Mondot

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

From a mag. Starting to get to wines which are more in their drinking window which I appreciated. Leather, black fruits, touch of cigar. More runway to get better (CT window ending in 17 isn't right at least for my tastes).

  • 1988 Château Troplong Mondot

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

From a mag. The most beautiful of the early set and the only one that is truly in it's drinking window. There's smoke and leather and cigar and just overall a very nice and tasty wine.

  • 1989 Château Troplong Mondot

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

From a mag and opened earlier in the day. For many this was the wine of the tasting and I'll admit it's really good as well, but for me the '86 was more in the right spot. This was still a bit youngish. Get a touch of violets, some darker fruits, a bit of spice. Certain elegance to it but I think it needs at least another ten years with this format.

  • 1986 Château Troplong Mondot

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

From a mag and opened in the morning and served at the end of dinner. This was just beautiful and definitely my WOTN. Get black plums and spice and a real vibrancy to the wine while still coming across as mature. Very enjoyable.

  • 1983 Château Troplong Mondot

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

This is another nice win. Good aged Bordeaux. Not quite in the league of the '86 or '89 but enjoyable nonetheless. It's more in the secondary or maybe even tertiary spot. Lots of old library and maybe even a hint of dried leaves. Still good.

Closing

My favorite of the night was definitely the '86, but I think all of the 80's were great (and in perfect drinking windows).
