  • NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée Edition 167eme 93 Points

    France, Champagne

118007. Much better than I would have guessed, given the base, but I guess in the worse years, they put in more reserve wine, so it actually bulks up the quality. Nonetheless, this is probably the easiest drinking GC since the 163eme, and I'll confess to liking this a little more. It's got the classic richness, but stylistically it's a little more open-knit and approachable, with a hint of juicy sweetness. Just goes to show the average quality of the GC year in, year out.

118014. From the second(?) bottle opened here in the midwest. Initially, before we tasted the 2004, this seemed a little light, showing just a slight hint of hazelnut on the finish, and a lighter, white-fruited disposition. "Tastes likes Krug," I said. Next to the 2004, more of the pinot character shows, and the contrast is fairly stark; there isn't that raw acid drive in the 2006, and given so many of the other 2006s I've had, I would have thought this would show more raw power, but right now this feels fairly light. Admittedly, I expected a little more oomph, but maybe that will come with some more time in the bottle. In any case, my faith in Krug is stronger than my own tasting abilities. At the end of the day, I preferred both the 2004 and the 162eme showcased alongside to the 2006.

316034. Served next to the 2006, and the raw acid-driven power in this wine becomes really apparent. While this doesn't seem to have the lighter pinot touch of the 2006, it makes up for it by showcasing the chardonnay so prominently. Bright acidity, clean, linear, and precise. It doesn't quite have the nutty richness of the 2006 or the GCs (the white-fruited acids are more evocative of the 164eme), but the weight is there, and I'm pretty confident about the agining potential.

414082. Probably my favourite of the wines poured tonight -- this tasted the closest to my conception of Krug. A little nuttier with some very lovely browned fruit tones, counterbalanced by acidity that is there but not screechy. Rounded on the palate, this was the wine most ready to drink and showing the best.
