Introduction

I unfortunately arrived a bit late and so didn't end up doing most of the Bordeaux, but caught up with the group. Lovely set of conversation and interesting dinner companions and some great food and wine.

Flight 1 - Main event (12 Notes)

  • 1969 Domaine Pierre Naigeon Bonnes Mares

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Luckily our bottle was good. It had been open for a few hours by the time I got to it and I think it was starting to fade some (not sure how it came out of the bottle as I joined late). It's fun to try old Burgundy but this fits into the showing ok category which doesn't comport at all with the cost of it unfortunately. Bit of leaves and shoots and all of that. Fruit faded.

  • 1918 Château L'Evangile

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

I'm a total old wine geek and there is something special in general about old Bordeaux. This wasn't probably the best bottle (felt like there was a hint of cork taint to it), but it wasn't so overpowering that it wasn't drinkable. The fruit was mostly faded and you were more in cigar and leather and old library territory. It was a touch on the faded side which could be because the bottle was open for some hours before I tried it or could be because it's just a very old wine and on the downswing. Still a very fun one and not something you run across so often.

  • 2007 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

This is the producer that many of my 'ah ha' burgundy moments have been had with so I think the expectations may have been too high. I'd say this was a perfectly enjoyable wine, but on the young side and a bit tight and seemed to have the poor man's version of that slightly ethereal, beautiful fruit profile that I am so enchanted with (of course no one should reference poor man and Roumier in the same sentence except as perhaps the potential outcome of a habit here). Wonder if a few more years would have added that extra elegance.

  • 1971 Barisone Barolo

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

I'd never heard of this producer, but I am a fan of old barolo and this one was nice. I think the bottle might have been opened earlier and prob should have had a decant for sediment (I had some chunks at the bottom of the glass) but overall it was drinking nicely. Bit more metallic in nature and that crisper structure.

  • 2001 Marchesi di Barolo Barolo Cannubi

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Totally fine barolo that was overshadowed by it's partner potentially because of the extra 30 years that it had. This had a little bit more of a bite (maybe the oak? But would have thought integrated by now).

  • 1989 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Strong contender for WOTN with the La Turque. This was velvet and elegance and floral and dark fruits and drinking just very very well. If anything it is too young to be drinking now but we're perhaps just heading into the window. Really lovely and a treat to try.

  • 1989 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Feral monster in the best possible way and one of my contenders for WOTN (along with it's sibling the La Mouline). Just all animal and meaty and briney and only a background hint of the black fruits. Very enjoyable. Great with the lamb.

  • 1989 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Always the shyest of the siblings i"m not sure I've ever had one of these that was really ready to drink. Instead this felt tight and a bit more tannic and overall just a bit quiet. Give it at least 20 more years.

  • 1991 Penfolds Grange

    Australia, South Australia

In as much as Grange can be a bummer this bottle was just a hint of a bummer. Had dropped it off at the restaurant a few days before with the plan that they could do a multi-hour decant before dinner. As it was they opened it fairly quickly before pouring and even though it was decanted and rebottled the reality is the wine needed a lot more time. Not that it wasn't good (it was), but next to a bunch of '89 LaLa's it wasn't totally amazing and these days I expect my Grange to be amazing. Think of all of the standard flavors, but with this thin veil over it so the wine wasn't quite as commanding as it can be. Will hold the rest of ours. This was a young vintage to be fair as far as Granges go.

  • 1989 Weingut Werner & Sohn Leiwener Klostergarten Riesling Eiswein Auction

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

A truly small pour as this was a half bottle going across 15 people. It was lovely. Can tell the age. Almost carmelized crystals. Nice sweetness but with balance. A hint of smokiness to it. Drinking nicely.

  • 2009 Château Coutet Barsac

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

Apparently this is a wine that comes out for 50th birthday parties. It's young and sweet and lots of orange peel and honey and nectar and perhaps a bit forward at this stage of it's life, but still very enjoyable. Perfect for the sweet tooth.

  • 1976 Krohn Porto Colheita

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Previous note smack on. It's tawny in color and tastes like dried fruits and maybe some nuts and a hint of fruitcake I suppose. Suspect if you had it in 50 years it would drink the same.

Flight 2 - Bonus bottle after party (2 Notes)

  • 2005 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

A popular vintage for me in the Southern Rhone as it seems to have been a good one and yet have a fair amount of restraint which I appreciate. Could also have been the wine was in the decanter for prob an hour and change before I got to it. Darker fruits but not overly ripe. Easy to drink, but nothing that jumps out.

  • NV Egly-Ouriet Champagne Grand Cru Tradition Brut

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Because sometimes the end of the night just needs some bubbles and this is one of my go-tos. Always tasty. A bit stronger in acid in style. Some roundness as well. Slightly mineral. Enjoyable.

Closing

It's a rare night when the Grange is not my WOTN, but I have to give the edge here to the '89 La Mouline and the '89 La Turque. Very different, but both drinking just awesomely.
