Introduction

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • NV Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. It's been about a year and a half since I had this. I was doing a lot of organizing when we poured this so I didn't get to it for a while, but it was worth it when I did. This is always an over performer to me, and I love the classic style. Very nice with dough up front, apple, chalk minerality, and a touch of toast. This has a medium plus frame and comes off very sophisticated especially at the price point.

  • 2006 Moët & Chandon Champagne Grand Vintage Rosé 90 Points

    France, Champagne

Light salmon color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes plus. This was a little flat out the bottle and the lack of energy made a difference. It wasn't quite a still wine, but it wasn't too far off. That being said, I found the basis there for a good rose. There was quite a bit of earthiness on the nose with raspberry cream. The palate shows chalky minerality and some yeast. The red berry fruit really emerges after about 15 minutes in glass to give this a more balanced and refined character. A bit subdued tonight by the lack of bubbles, but it's all there.

  • 2013 Under The Wire Sparkling Pinot Noir Alder Springs Vineyard 84 Points

    USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino

Light-medium salmon color. Followed a glass over 30 plus minutes. This was pretty wonky. Lets just say it didn't work for me. Rather herbaceous to almost vegetal, musty to pungent florals, tart cherry, cranberry and pommegranate on a rather angular finish. I'll pass.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2011 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru La Forest 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Light gold color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. This has a nice citrus nose with tangerine and Meyer lemon with a lot of sweet tart character to the nose and palate; limestone, lime, with a ton of sea air that emerges over about 10 or 15 minutes. The palate shows the sour citrus fruits, lime, Meyer lemon, sea shells, and a very tart powdery dry extract with a medium plus finish. Still has that youthful exhuberance.

  • 2012 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Clos St. Landry Blanc 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. This has evolved quite nicely over the last 4+ years. Round with toasted oak, white peach and citrus on the nose. The palate almost has a California quality to the ripe pear and pineapple fruits. Good wet stone minerality, citrus, dried earth, tosted oak and nice dry extract on a citrus infused finish. I was impressed.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 2013 Thomas Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 93 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

Medium crystalline ruby red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. Sultry deep berries on the nose, raspberry and strawberry, dried earth and fiine spices, nice purity to the nose. The palate is seamless and elegant, spiced red berries, medium body, dried earth; great clarity and purity. The Thomas wines always have such poise to them, it reminds me of some great Burgundy producers. This has always been very good but I think it's starting to move to another level now.

  • 2013 Shea Wine Cellars Pinot Noir Block 7 Shea Vineyard 89 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Medium dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour. This was a little bit klunky, some green notes, cranberry, briary, medium full bodied; good but a little underwhelming. 88+ to 89pts.

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 1989 Château Léoville Poyferré 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Very dark red/puple color, 2mm clear margin. PNP, drank a glass plus over 2 hours. Oh my, what a nose; this is singing immediately and it just gets fully involved over 10 or 15 minutes. The nose is earthy at first with a damp forest floor, leather, dried herbs, cassis, raspberry, pencil; and some menthol later that all comes together in a gorgeous perfume. The palate is full bodied with a silky texture, very polished tannins and some pretty pencil lead is what catches your attention first. But then the oh so pretty fruit starts to grab you, cassis, dark berries, and red raspberry and blueberries abound; then you notice the leather, damp earth and dried herbs, there's a little char as well as the well integrated oak and a nice long finish. This was a beautiful bottle; a great '89 and a wine that has got another twenty years.

  • 2001 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Very dark red/purple color. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes. Very nice nose with funk, earth, cassis, pencil, orange peel, blood orange, dried wood. Needs some time to be realized in glass, but it comes together gradually over 30 minutes plus. The palate shows a soft texture, lots of graphite, cassis, dried spices, and wood on a medium plus body with a classicly restrained Mondavi style that I love. This is just in the early drinking window and should integrate even further over time. Give it just a little air and you're good to go.

  • 2001 Seavey Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Very dark red/purple color. This had gotten a couple hour decant I believe. Followed a glass over 90 minutes. Disappionting show for this wine given some nice recent notes from CT and Tanzer. I found it to be very oaky and high toned. Very dark fruit with a lot of blackberry liqueur followed by cassis and plum on the fruit profile. Very spicy and there's a lot of agressive tannins right now too. ST suggested a window of 2018 to 2032, and judging from this bottle I'd wait at least 5 years to see if this integrates more. Score reserved, but I'm leery of the future.

  • 2008 Outpost Cabernet Sauvignon 87 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

Purple red color. PNP, followed a glass over an hour. The nose is better than the palate, offering blackberries, green pepper, and fresh herbs and oak. The palate comes off rather angular and a bit over the top, but it's really the balance that is suffering now as there's a lot of heat and oak as well. I enjoyed this better a couple years ago.

  • 2004 La Rioja Alta Rioja Viña Arana Reserva 91 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. This was in a good place tonight. Lots of earth, red cherry oak, dried herbs and spices. The palate is medium plus bodied, cherry, dried herbs, loam, spices and a bit of oak.

  • 2010 Château de Vaudieu Châteauneuf-du-Pape Val de Dieu 89 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Very dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 30 minute plus. The nose is ok with kirsch, some subtle garrigue, extracted black fruits, spice and cedar box. The palate has a lot glycerin, very spicy, blackberry liqueur, black cherry liqueur, extracted style, garrigue. Not sure this gets a lot better.

Flight 7 (1 Note)

  • 2001 Château Suduiraut 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Lovely medium golden color. PNP, small glass from 750ml. This wine is so good and we have it often enough that it is easy to take it for granted. That would be a mistake, as this is one fine wine. Very well balanced and in a good mid term drinking window, this shows creme brulee, caramelized sugar, peach, tangerine, orange marmalade, botrytis spice and a honeyed unctuous but very refined palate that balances sweetness, spice and acid very well.
