Introduction

Classic Christmas in July, this time at Ben and Estellas place with oysters and gravalax and crab cauliflower soup and goose and duck and croquembouche and christmas cake

Flight 1 (17 Notes)

my favourite wine was probably the chablis...it was just showing so well...but there was a lot of joy to be had here.

  • 1997 Jacquesson & Fils Champagne Grand Cru Extra Brut Avize

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Crisp mousse, bread, honey, lemon, a little green apple. Bone dry with honey and muted lemon notes, texture on the mid palate. Nice

  • 2011 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Green apple, gooseberry, slightly herbaceous, green gages, fruit grows a little riper with time on the nose. Fleshy, again slightly unripe on the nose, a touch of bitterness and a touch of woody texture on the mid palate. with time the fruit ripens a little. Okay.

  • 2012 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

As per last note this feels like a slightly riper version of the 2011, a bit more creamy textured, the apple notes more ripe, similar bitter touches though. Perhaps they are both in a kind of dumb phase?

  • 2012 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Rich, slightly buttery, citrus and peach, a little struck match and, with time, touches of apple on the nose. In the mouth it's more citric than on the nose, textured mid palate, again rich, long, balanced, harmonious, arguably still young but defo in its drinking window. Yum.

  • 2005 Peter Lehmann Sémillon Margaret

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa

Honey, toast, butter, a hit of kerosene and apple. Quite rich smelling. Juicy, honeyed, textured, rich and creamy with glycerol thickness, less linear than the Hunter equivalents and probably slightly more forward. Nice.

  • 1998 Antonin Guyon Corton-Renardes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Aromas of leather, earth, slight farmyard, soy, umami, wet blackberry tends to bramble, cedar, toast, slight coffee. Juicy, the tertiary notes are equally to the fore, the fruit very much playing second fiddle and there is plenty of texture to the mid palate helping this play with the protein.

  • 2009 Domaine Rossignol Trapet Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Etelois

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Cherry, savoury spice, and jubey red berries with a slightly sour note, earthy. the juicy acidity is a touch lifted, there are talc textured tannins and the fruit strays darker here. Hmm

  • 2012 By Farr Pinot Noir Tout Près

    Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Geelong

Pretty, slightly ashy earthy notes, jubey blackberry is very much to the fore compared to the Burgundies, tiny touch of stalks as well here on the nose. Ashy and stalky notes are a little too prevalent on the palate, fruit much of muchness but more hidden, talc textured tannins. A better one of these, for me, though.

  • 2010 Château Quinault L'Enclos

Sweet spices cedar, plum, blackcurrant, chocolate and a slight herbaceous tobacco leaf note. In the mouth it has a cocoa powder dusting to the slightly chalky tannins, bone dry black fruits, young but shows potential.

  • 2013 Colombera & Garella Coste della Sesia Cascina Cottignano

Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Coste della Sesia

  • 2011 Matteo Correggia Roero La Val Dei Preti

    Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Roero

Slightly volatile, a little dusty, sweet spice, a kind of lifted orange note, plums, slight alcohol warmth on the nose. And the latter of these attributes translates to the palate with chalky tannins that persist long. despite the alcohol the plummy fruit tends to the sour though not overtly so. Nice.

  • 2009 Château Sigalas Rabaud

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Medium plus intensity aromas of apricot, orange marmalade, cream, vanilla...In the mouth it's lusciously sweet though still juicy, rich, gylcerol, for me it's a little 'fatty' for the acidity and still showing young, slight wood glue underpin but not in a negative way. Pleasant.

  • 1985 Gould Campbell Porto Vintage

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Very much as per my tasting in June from the Coravin. This was opened and allowed to air (rather than decanted) for about six hours before being consumed with Christmas cake.
