  • 1961 Château Petit Village

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Still a good colour, slightly deeper than the 82. Dense, fleshy garnet. Good fruit with slightly tarry elements on the nose. Positive. Lovely textre, smooth, nicely flavoured and decent length. This is very good. **** Still going strong ater three hours in the glass. Certainly one of the wines of the evening.

  • 1982 Château Petit Village

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Slightly paler than the 61; washed out, slightly sweaty nose initially. Also a little thinner in the mouth than the 61 but with higher acidity. Again, on returning to this it has developed a lovly complexity on the nose. palate nice, but more a 'good drink' than a wow wine for prolonged contemplation. ****

  • 1998 Château Petit Village

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Stil slightly purple. Rubbery nose. Grippy on entry. Reasonable length but still very primary. Burnt rubber really coming through on the nose now. Improved with air - palate revealing more complexity and the tannins softening a little. After 30 minutes the burnt rubber has blown off and this has opened up nicely. Needs time. **(*1/2)

  • 1983 Pétrus

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Mid garnet. Light, elegant, complex nose. Nuanced. Quite concnetrated on entry, complex and multidimensional. Long. Surprisingly elegant and complex rather than being a powerhouse. Slightly drying on the finish. Nose opening and improving with time. Plummy, spicy fruit. Slightly tobaccoey. Classy in an undefinable way - starquality like the 67 DRC Echezeaux at Davis P's recent offline. ****1/2. After an hour or so the nose is tobbaco dominated and it seems quite Graves-like. 3 hours on and asiatic spices have taken over and it's really hitting its stride. Very complex. After 3 1/2 hours, sweet asian spices and an Earl Grey tea-like aroma of bergamot dominate the nose whilst the palate is now really meaty - flavours just like a well hung rare wing-rib of beef. Just lovely.

  • 1999 Château La Conseillante

Lovely nose, good fruit, very expressive. Gorgeous fruit on the attack. Realy really lovely. Excellent weight and acidity. Very much what one imagines a Pomerol should be. Very complete. Super. *****

  • 1999 Château L'Evangile

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Coffe and chocolate on the nose. Quite dry on entry. Classy, good fruit but in a cool and restrained style. Let down by the faintest hint of bitterness on the finish. ***(*)

  • 1990 Vieux Château Certan

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Slightly tea-like palate to start with. Earl grey / bergamot fragrance but more muted and less fleshy than the 89. Better structure and delineation though. Mineral. Excellent. ****1/2

  • 1989 Vieux Château Certan

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Lovely nose, slightly sweaty but good, complex fruit. far nicer on the nose than my last note of this. Lovely, velvety, smooth fruit. harmonious. Lovely balance, cool and quite long. The 90 tonight is a slightly better wine though. ****

A clear house style here - restrained, elegant and mineraly rather than fleshy and voluptuous. I like them but can see they might not be one's idea of typical Pomerol.
