Introduction

Frank missed the big Piedmont tasting on Saturday so we had a look at a subset of the wines (and book ended with some cheeky CndP's and a bottle of Lambrusco)

It was also a good opportunity for me to have a go at calibrating my palate a bit.

Flight 1 - Cheeky CndP (5 Notes)

Franks a big CndP fan so it seemed a shame not to have a little snort

  • 1981 Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

From Coravin. Positively burgundian nose as they say; earth, mushroom, slight leather, warm slightly baked cherry fruit, slight black tea and herbaceous notes. touches of wet stone. Sourly juicy, alcohol warmth, fruit tea, earth, leather, tannins are still present and show as grainy textured. Begs rotisserie chicken and a little chilling. Yum.

  • 2005 Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

From Coravin. Bright red berry fruit, plenty of sweet spice, cream, a little sour cherry underpin with orange peel, alcohol prickle, touches of garrigue and, with time, the fruit ripens and thickens. Juicy acidity, alcohol warmth helps to make the mouth water, red berry fruit, a little muted, tannins are medium minus intensity but silky and persist long. On the finish leather and that orange peel note though not bitter or astringent. Nice.

  • 2005 Les Cailloux (Lucien et André Brunel) Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

From Coravin. Pretty, perfumed raspberry and strawberry with a dusty underpin and some peppery spice, with time a little charcuterie, baked herbs and a little touch of bitters. Juicy, that bitters note joins the red fruits backed by alcohol warmth, peppery spice, quite fresh, tannins are a little grainy. Long, nice, slightly rustic in this line up and starts to fall apart and get more volatile with time in the glass. Hmm.

  • 2005 Domaine de Beaurenard (Paul Coulon et Fils) Châteauneuf-du-Pape Boisrenard

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Woof. Here we go. Ripe and dense smelling, dark baked fruits, an almost menthol underpin, cherry, blackberry, red berry a little like cola concentrate backed with new oak (caramel, slight vanilla). in the mouth it's very much a reflection of the nos...alcohol is intrusive and creates a chilli spice note, extracted fruit, grainy tannins. A bit overdone for me. Lacks generosity.

  • 2007 Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

From Coravin. Initially gamey and meaty, there is ethanol here as well as roasted red and black fruits. A little cream, caramel and vanilla beneath this as well as baked earth and garrigue on the nose. Juicy, savoury, meaty, earthy, dark hued fruits tends to plums, alcohol warmth is present but not intrusive, tannins are drying but silky, rosemary and a little lavender on the finish. Good.

Flight 2 - Langhe (2 Notes)

Just the two in this bracket as I had "accidentally" drunk a few of the others...

  • 2018 G.D. Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

From Coravin. Jubey cherry, plums, dried flower and orange peel, a little sweet spice. In the mouth it is juicy with medium plus intensity acidity, similar flavours to the nose are joined by a little fruit tea and medium plus intensity grippy, grainy, persistent tannins, a little alcohol warmth though this is still refreshing wet. That jubey note to the fruit is here as well. This is a bit clever for me.

  • 2012 Bruno Rocca Langhe Rabajolo

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

From Coravin. Bold black fruits; cherry and currant, a little plum, sweet spice, cedar, a little cigar box almost and herbaceous underpin. Quite ripe in the mouth, it's juicy, rich though that ripeness is not overpowering. Tannins are slightly grainy, there is a touch of alcohol warmth on the finish which proves moderately intrusive and a smidge of plain chocolate. Hmm.

Flight 3 - Barbaresco (4 Notes)

Hmm...

  • 2012 Bruno Rocca Barbaresco

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

From Coravin. medium minus intensity aromas of dried flowers, pot pourri, dried orange peel, slight cedar and sweet spice over umeboshi plum, fresh herbs, almost a little almond. Medium plus intensity acidity and tannins slap the palate around, the aromas of the nose are, for the most part, recreated in the mouth, alcohol warmth is less intrusive here though lends a peppery note on the finish as well as a touch of meatiness. Hmm.

  • 2016 Moccagatta Barbaresco Bric Balin

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

From Coravin. Caramel, cream, vanilla, ripe plums, a slightly baked quality to the fruit. Medium plus intensity acidity and massive drying tannins that also show that new oak. Everything else plays second fiddle (except the alcohol). Fruit is ripe with plums but the oak is in charge. Time I'm hoping...

  • 2016 Moccagatta Barbaresco Cole

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

From Coravin. Caramel, tar, almost a little leather (surely not in a wine this young), sweet spice, alcohol lends a peppery prickle, meaty, slightly sour plum and cherry fruit, there is a sweetness here as well that I can't my finger on...In the mouth it's got medium plus intensity acidity, tannins are pronounced, but the palate, on this occasion, seems to just show oak - good quality oak mind you - but, none the less. Time I'm hoping.

  • 2016 Moccagatta Barbaresco Basarin

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

From Coravin. Recalcitrant and closed on the nose but with a sense of density and mass. Agitation brings forth ripe plums tending to prune, caramel, sweet spice, lashings of polished oak. Medium plus intensity acidity, oak, plummy fruit, medium plus woody tannins are drying and close down the palate. Vinfanticide...

Flight 4 - Barolo (4 Notes)

I still love that Podere Ruggeri...

  • 2007 Paolo Scavino Barolo

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

From Coravin. Ripe plums, oak, a little cherry, sweet spice, dried orange and pot pourri, very slightly dried out perhaps? A little caramel. The oak translates to the palate but does not detract from the acid, flavours or tannins. Fleshy, juicy, with grainy, chalky, very slightly woody tannins that persist. Yum.

  • 2004 Giacomo Brezza e Figli Barolo Sarmassa

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

From Coravin. Farmyard; Bretty, horse shit, leather, a little bacon fat, dried orange peel, cherry over plum. Stinky and slightly dirty nose - not a problem for me. Medium plus intensity acidity, farmyard funk on the palate as well with muted cherry and plum fruit, bacon fat and silky, persistent, lightly grainy tannins carrying all. Kind of nice.

  • 2007 Marcarini Barolo Brunate

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

From Coravin. Earth, almost graphite, initially, then plums and sour cherry, pencil shavings, spice, dried citrus peel, slightly meaty and a touch of volatility. That volatility translates to the palate, tar, medium plus intensity acidity, tannins are drying and grainy, alcohol warmth, citrus peel over plum on the palate. Hmm

  • 2008 Podere Ruggeri Corsini Barolo San Pietro

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

From Coravin. Cherry over plum, sweetly fruited, pot pourri, black tea, fresh orange peel, slight tar, very clean. Lovely nose. The palate is very much a reflection of the nose, balanced with medium plus intensity acidity and medium plus chalky tannins go hand in hand with the fruit and other characteristics from the nose. Fresh and enjoyable.

Flight 5 - Lambrusco (1 Note)

Well, this was a foaming bundle of joy

Closing

yet again when we set off on our tasting journey we said we'd be behaved and finish up early and yet again after we polished off the Lambrusco we had a couple of nips of whisky before I poured Frank out of the door...still, all very good fun.
