France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Reddish violet, clarity; sweet berries, plum, blueberry, raspberry, tart, sweet custardy edge, enticing floral, slight dusty mineral, touch of bramble and wild herb, slight jam quality, peppery; palate confirms nose with peppery sharper high toned red fruit, texture of Pinot but has to be Grenache, licorice and slight medicinal, kirsch on the finish; called '15 Mont Redon CdP.
Super extracted core, chocolate to thin duller violet rim; American oak, dense, chocolaty dark fruit, vanilla bean, espresso, glycerin, big and rich, boysenberry, very ripe, grainy tannin, menthol, eucalyptus, full and compact, clove spice and its numbing quality, loamy soil, powerful alcohol; not for me, too in your face; was on Syrah initially but was too intense; called '08 Leonetti Cab.
Darker core with larger violet rim; sweet plum, a touch foxy, lots of juicy qualities with oak manipulation, charred oak, canned green beans sneak in on the back, a confected/fake smell to it, heavy, powdered tannin, tart and acidified; an extremely concocted wine made in the cellar.
Mine; extracted chocolate core with duller maroon rim; decomposing green pepper, cedar, tobacco, a little tar and char, black currant, high toned glycerin, vanilla and coconut; structured but gentler fruit on the palate, broad mouthfeel, getting better with air, black currant, blackberry liqueur, a little menthol, aged and more complexity, savory and good nobility, oaky but good quality of fruit.
Opaque core with bright violet rim; lots of ash and green pepper, spicy, capsicum, whiskey barrel, dark rich fruit, black licorice, dark chocolate, Cab Franc?- too structured for Argentinian CF, high quality Chilean Carmenere, Kai? very solid.
See through crimson with pale rim; graham cracker, some plastic, VA, nutty, sweet liqueured fruit, very high alcohol, a bit herbaceous and medicinal; Amarone?
Darker core with bricking at rim; earth, clay, compost, green pepper, red currant, aged, cigar tobacco, obviously Bordeaux, some iodine on the palate, resolving tannin, musk, fairly voluptuous St. Estephe? called 2000 Chasse-Spleen.
Dark core with larger brick garnet rim; stank, Bordeaux, cigar tobacco, getting to that black truffle zone, a bit leaner and tannic, drying out a bit, funk, tilled earth, good producer off year, '98 Clerc?
Dark core with large bricking rim; leather, musk, cooked cobbler quality to the fruit, dark, grippy, tart finish, fig, earth and stank, tar, black pepper, some menthol, older, old wood, grainy, strong tannin, menthol, powerful wine, nutty finish, puckering tannin, liqueured slight medicinal, dark fruit; '04 Dal Forno Valpo?
See through crimson with large orange rim; sexy nose, candied rose petals, orange and cherry, menthol, touch of oak, fennel, generous, noble tannins, tart sour orange and red fruit on the nose, finer tannin, supple and delicious, special; '09 Bricco della Viole?
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Semitranslucent crimson, large orange rim; aged, fennel, drying out, sour cherry, red currant, burnt orange, mahogany, acid softened and fleshier mouthfeel, savory, at peak or just past, some balsamico; '07 Talenti BdM?
Crimson core with pale orange rim, fine sediment; so meaty and savory, leather, sweet rich fruit, exotic, viscous, red apple skin, dried oranges, liquor soaked cherry, so distinctive, youthful tart finish; called '01 Musar
Aged core with bricking garnet rim; black currant and tobacco, aging well, high toned oak, vanilla with a more delicate fruit profile, juicy, spicy, red pepper, high toned, clove, decent acids, classic Bordeaux varietals, domestic.
