Introduction

Six of us got together to drink a lot of nice wines. We were situated at a big private room which was nice. All the wines showed well but the red Burgundies really shined.

Flight 2 - White Burgundy (2 Notes)

The Leflaive was premoxed. Caveat emptor starting 1995 to 2010. The recent wines are stellar once again.

  • 2007 Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Premoxed. Way too much creme brulee and no freshness. Way too dark as well.

  • 2018 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Incredibly focused nose displaying yellow citrus with a hint of white, fresh lemon, lemon curd, pear, honey, honeysuckle, saline, white flower and strong limestone mineral. Excellent concentration, slightly coiled dense yellow fruit, rich and oily but also very precise and focused, bright acidity and strong mineral, and a long coiled yellow fruit driven finish with honeysuckle at the end. There is only a hint of the 18 ripeness and if I tasted blind, I may have guessed 2015. This is a classic Les Clos.

Incredibly perfumed yet elegant nose displaying essence of red fruit, subtle raspberry, cherry soda, rose, fresh porcini, a slight hint of sous bois, sap, sweet spice and crushed rocks. Absolutely gorgeous Chambolle palate, so finely layered concentrated yet elegant pure red fruit, intense yet weightless, perfect amount of acidity and strong limestone mineral, and a seamless long subtle pure red fruit driven finish with perfume and rose at the end. This is a classic mesmerizing Amoureuses. I can smell this all day and night.

  • 1999 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Very youthful nose displaying incredibly concentrated sweet black fruit, blackberry, blackberry liqueur, black cherry, dark spices, caramel, a hint of vanilla and mineral. Exceptional concentration, tightly packed concentrated black fruit, dense, deeply toned and rich, medium acidity, medium mineral and a medium to long concentrated black fruit driven finish with caramel at the end. There is no noticeable sous bois. This will need at least another decade to be ready. I much preferred the 01 Amoureuses.

Flight 4 - Piedmont (3 Notes)

They all seemed so young.

  • 1990 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino 97 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Incredibly concentrated youthful nose displaying very ripe massive black fruit, blackberry liqueur, black cherry, licorice, tar, leather, dark spices and iron. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of intense black fruit, unctuous, rich and opulent but also showing good precision and balance, bright acidity and strong iron mineral and a long concentrated ripe black fruit driven finish with licorice and iron at the end. This incredibly youthful and unbelievably concentrated wine will need another decade or more to reach the youthful peak.

Flight 6 - Latour (1 Note)

This showed well, a classic claret with noticeable green.

  • 1996 Château Latour Grand Vin 97 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Classic Pauillac nose displaying intense black fruit with a hint of red, crème de cassis, blackberry, black cherry, noticeable bell pepper/green, lead pencil and earth. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of intense cassis, silky and polished, excellent balance and precision, noticeable but fine tannins, and a long concentrated cassis driven finish with lead pencil at the end. This is a classic claret. There is a lot more green and lead pencil compare to the 96 Margaux which is my favorite FG.
