Krug tasting (Freiheit Vinothek, Ulm, Germany): Glass: Riedel Superleggero Champagne Tasted blind - pirate. Clear, medium amber color. Way fresher nose than the 88 Vintage. On the palate a bit weird. You could sense that it has some age, but it was also very fresh. For me, this tension field made it a bit unbalanced. But it was very good: Beautiful energy and tension, extract and salty mineral notes. But it lacks the harmony and elegance of the 88 Vintage for me. Nevertheless a wonderful experience to taste these two bottles side by side. 93-94

Krug Vintage vertical spanning Collection 1988/1996/1998/2000/2002/2003/2004/2006. Blind tasting. My bottle and WOTN though 1996/1998 came reasonably close. This was the broadest palate by some distance. Mouth filling palate. Texturally this was superior. It felt fresher than more recent vintages having benefitted as one knowledgeable participant observed from long lees aging and recent disgorgement. The prices are eye-watering though. Considering how close the next 2 wines came it is a better strategy to buy on release and cellar perfectly.

Pardon the brevity, I don't drink enough champagne!
Single blind but bottles pulled at random.
Hazelnuts, oolong tea leaves, roasted corn and honey dominated the bouquet and palate for this one. Wonderfully mature with nuances that age can only bring - texturally gorgeous with cream and sparks of acidity.

Vosne 1er vs GC: Disgorged 2017. Perfect color. So much complexity and development with the nutty, oxidative notes. This is everything you want in a Krug.

Compared with the ‘85 Krug Collection in the previous glass it’s a bit lighter and less powerful. Never mind though, it’s a beauty in its own right; classy and mature with some bubbles, burnished fruit and smoke. No rush to drink since it is deepening but not fading.

Rich, flavourful, but lower energy compared to the impeccable ’83 Mesnil alongside. Obviously blended fruit comparatively. Like I find with many library releases this is in a state of arrested development and take a long while to open up in the glass and could well use more time to develop further. Improves over an hour or so. I wouldn’t rush to open another one of these.

Krug Lunch (7x GC, 7x Vintage, 3x CdM, 1x CdA): Seven vintages of Krug from 1988 to 2008. Consensus winner was the 1996 (98pts) with an unmatched layerdness and elegance. The 2002 (97pts) has equal features but doesn‘t have that extra 6 years of maturity. The 2004 (96pts) outperformed expectations, round and harmonious, beautiful first window of maturity. The 1998 was better from magnum (94pts) than 75cl (92pts) but is a leaner vintage. The 1995 (94pts) is fully mature and beautifully expressive. The two disappointments were a very lean 2008 (92pts) and a very elegant 1988 Collection (88pts) which, unfortunately, had too much sherry notes.
TN: Fresh and citrusy with some herbal and sherry aromas on the nose. On the palate still loads of energy, but sherry notes together with citrus, fresh orcharchd, apple and minerality. Seems very young structure wise but old with all the sherry notes. Really not my style of Champagne as I can't stand sherry notes (and the reception in the room was not that great either) but well constructed, incredibly elegant.

Krug Tasting (Memories Bad Ragaz): Krug tasting hosted by a merchant and collector. Main takeaways: 1/ Clos du Mesnil and the 1996 back vintage were show-stoppers, 2/ 164 was in a different league of the Grande Cuvée line-up, 3/ a general feature and maybe signature for Krug for me was the fine integration of autolytic notes into a balance of fruit and mineral notes. The textures tend to be soft with just a splash of cream and structures built around acidity. 4/ Clos du Mesnil towers over the vintage and GCs in terms of precision, complexity and elegance.
Tasting note: Intense nose with nicely aged, Williams-like pear fruit, hazelnuts and caramel note. On balance mineral and dry, lacking sweet notes. Palate clearly reflects the age, quite nice aromatics with an emphasis on ox notes, but the structure was underwhelming and the finish overly citric. Still a solid fizz, but the laggard in this tasting.

Outstanding beautifully preserved old Krug at its best. The combination of burnished old gold color, reasonable if brief mousse and freshness is proof of the value of the Collection program. While you wouldn’t want to age it any further, you also don’t feel any urgency to gulp it down before it dies. It worked well with some semi-soft mild cheeses.

late disgorgement - a fantastic rendition of one of my favorite wines from Krug. Disgorged in 2017 and released a couple years later. Precise and focused deep yellow fruit with spice and nutty edges. Right now the late disgorgement creates a bit of a disjointed wine, where the oxidative aged notes on along the edges while the fruit is bright and piercing in the middle. They still need to fully integrate but seeing how much of a fresh edge the wine has right now in its core, I don't fear it falling apart like the 85/89/90 collections seem to be
These 88 Collections have been somewhat confounding. This bottle was "good", but showing less fresh than expected and clearly in it's final quarter of life. Others have ranged from extremely young, to in one case undrinkable.

I think this is the best bottle of the three I have had so far. Reduced nose, think good Leflaive or Coche with a slight burnt popcorn. Mature and developed but still very fresh. Solid effervescence. Still has high, tuning fork acidity. Palate is bright, fresh, vibrant. Lifted and energetic. Great example. 94 - 95.

Bright, fresh, vibrant, a sort of arrested state of development with a shot of energy and life to a mature / developed champagne. Nose is more mature with orange citrus, toast, and nuts in the slightly oxidative Krug style. Hazelnut, slight smoke. Palate is brighter and more youthful with acid and more citrus. Rich, textured, and quite powerful. Excellent champagne, but if you are being ultra critical, the complaint here would be that the nose (more indicative ‘88 maturity) and palate (‘Collection’ energy bump) aren’t aligned yet. Maybe the recent disgorgement needs time to settle. I liked this a lot but will wait to open my others. Can’t help but feel ‘88 regular release is a little more integrated and complete, and creamier in top examples.

Burgundy and Barolo dinner - Krug, Raveneau, Giacosa, Monfortino, Mugnier and etc. (Capital Grille, Tysons, VA): Fully mature nose displaying subtle yellow and red fruit, apricot, baked apple, orange peel, brioche, marzipan, sweet spices and subtle mineral. Fully mature palate, finely layered subtle sweet yellow fruit, medium fine medium generous mousse, bright acidity, subtle mineral, and a long sweet yellow fruit driven finish with honey and orange peel at the end. Burnished medium deep gold with a decent spray for age although the bubbles disappeared in about 20 minutes. Deep, rich and powerful with lots of toffee and hazelnut flavor with a bit of smoke. Begs for food. Obviously one to drink ASAP while there’s still some life in the vinous nursing home.

Beautiful burnished orange gold. Pinpoint bubbles which don’t last very long. That gorgeous Krug toast, deep but never vulgar. Orange peel, caramel, delicate wisp of smoke and nice acidity. Held very well in the glass. I find this better preserved than my bottles of “regular” ‘88 Krug even though I purchased them on release. This is a beautiful expression of the Krug signature but if you value freshness and vigor more than aged complexity, you will not really enjoy it.

Golden color with ethereal bubbles. The nose is opulent, on honey, spices and white fruits. In the mouth, we inevitably have this creamy touch that has made the reputation of the house. The wine is very young, blind we would give it 10 years younger. The juice is deliciously floral, with a fruity touch on crushed strawberries. The complexity of this wine is mind-boggling, both on the nose and on the palate, there is a kaleidoscope of flavors and aromas: honey, apples, hazelnuts, orange blossom, truffle, everything passes with a background of masterful and velvety balance. The freshness does not leave the wine, everything is fluid, obvious, the score is played superbly. Wonderful finish that concentrates notes of cinnamon, roast and maple syrup. The length is forthcoming, it's grandiose with that touch of freshness. Large and noble champagne, I never tire of this emotion that seizes me with each opening of a Krug Collection.

A memorable gathering (BRX American Bistro - Great Falls, VA): Beautiful fully mature nose displaying subtle yet decadent yellow fruit, apricot preserve, baked apple, fresh apple juicy, brioche, crème brulee, sweet spices and honey. Fully integrated palate, very finely layered sweet yellow fruit, medium fine medium abundant mousse, warm and round, fluid and refined, medium acidity and subtle mineral, and a seamless long subtle sweet yellow fruit driven finish with honey and sweet spices at the end. My first experience with the 88 Collection. Perhaps not as fresh and energetic as the well cellared regular 88 Krug but showing beautiful harmony, complexity and elegance. Like a beautiful mature white wine but not white Burgundy/Chadonnay. It opens up beautifully with air, becoming harmonious, sweet and complex. I will need to revisit soon.

My score here might appear stingy but I am trying to score as I saw it. Today it wasn't a stand-out champagne for me in an evening of many superlatives. It was quite tight, almost brutally dry making me wonder if it could have done with a slightly higher dosage. The bottle is likely going to improve with age though and it felt too early here today (tonight the Krug NV 151eme shone for Krug). Still a privilege to drink this of course.

MEA Celebration at St. Genevieve (St. Genevieve): Pop and pour. Tasted over about an hour. Bright gold color. Thrilling nose of orchard fruit and bread dough with that beguiling Krug oxidation. Equally thrilling on the palate with bright fruit, good flavor intensity, intriguing complexity and perfect balance. In a great place right now. Great acidity and a long, thrilling finish. Goldilocks in this trio: not quite as fresh as the '75 Dom Oeno but fresher than the '85 Dom P3. This is a complete wine from start to finish that kept getting better and better as it sat in the glass. A Tour de Force! Thanks to Brad for sharing such a compelling trio of Champagnes to start our night!

St. Genevieve Minneapolis: My first crack at the recently released 88 Collection. We had high expectations, and they were met. Over time, 1988 has been my favorite Krug vintage, and the love affair continues. I'll defer to the chablis28 write-up and simply say "I concur".

Served along side a '75 Dom Pérignon Oenothèque and I believe, a '85 Dom Pérignon P3. The Krug was clearly the most opulent, extraverted and robust of the 3 :). A pretty mature deep gold color. This wine showed a compelling range of flavors demanding you take notice. Minerally aromas of ripe fruit and bread dough. The palate has a striking minerality buttressed by; orange peel, lemon zest, orchard fruit, toffee, ginger, and honey with an intense but harmoniously beguiling level of elegance for such a big glass of champagne. In a word, this rocks. This is not subtle singer songwriter stuff. This is full on Who's Next ala 1971 Baba O'Riley. It would be fun to drink this alongside the earlier released regular 1988. Thanks Brad!

Kuki'o Wine Trip 2019; 9/22/2019-9/28/2019 (Champagne & Bordeaux): A fascinating side-by-side comparison of ‘88 ‘Collection’ and ‘88 regular release, and tonight the ‘88 regular absolutely crushed the ‘Collection’ and the ‘Collection’ bottle was pulled from the Krug cellars. This seemed more tired and oxidative whereas the regular release was booming with freshness and round Apple and pear fruit. This was hitting more tertiary Champagne notes of cinnamon and caramel whereas the regular release showed more like a fresh ‘00 or something. Will have to revisit this soon.

Burgundy and Barolo dinner - Krug, Raveneau, Giacosa, Monfortino, Mugnier and etc. (Capital Grille, Tysons, VA): Fully mature nose displaying subtle yellow and red fruit, apricot, baked apple, orange peel, brioche, marzipan, sweet spices and subtle mineral. Fully mature palate, finely layered subtle sweet yellow fruit, medium fine medium generous mousse, bright acidity, subtle mineral, and a long sweet yellow fruit driven finish with honey and orange peel at the end. Totally ready to go.

I wouldn't guess 88 and Collection. A bit too evolved for this elegant vintage. At the winery one year ago much fresher and more precise. 94-95

Trani. Italy wins European championship. Surprisingly young. But there is the elegance and the depth I find in NV Krug. Some hazelnut and orange.

potpourri gathering (JS's): late disgorgement.
Golden color with faint bubbles.
Initially some truffle/mushroom savory on nose, then pronounced lemony acidity. Some brioche depth with time.
Obvious class and complexity but still has time to give. 95 pts

Thought it it'd show younger due to late disgorgement but pretty ox and savory. Reminds me a bit of Selosse style ox.
Super annoying the OWC wood swelled up due to cellar humidity. Had to mallet and chisel open it.

Drinking nicely, this bottle of the relatively recent release of Collection was showing very young and has a lot of development left.

Dsg 2017 Composition: 50% pinot noir, 32% chardonnay and 18% pinot meunier

My third time with 88 Collection. First was excellent, second was an undrinkable bottle. This was good to very good, but far from excellent. Not sure what's going on with this disgorgement, as I've loved 88 Krug vintage. Will keep opening them to see how it develops.

Tense and youthful, like it was bottled 5 years ago. Complex, thrilling, textural. Just a complete wine from start to finish. A heavenly drop.
