Introduction

Largely Cru Bourgeois with some relatively minor classed browns at the top of the pecking order…

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 1996 Château Poujeaux 88 Points

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc

Full dense ruby. Cedar and blackcurrant. Blackcurrant leaf. Full. Still some tannin-led structure. Almost tightening a little with air to give a sense of stolidity. Has potential. ***

  • 2005 Château Poujeaux 89 Points

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc

Bright ruby. Denser, slightly dustier nose. Similar on palate to the 96, just a little more tannin but food-friendly approachable now. **(*)

  • 2000 Château La Tour Carnet 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Right ruby, a touch of magenta even. Very clear and bright. Floral. Cool and elegant. Cedar and old school fruit. Very pretty and resolved. Lovely and fully ready. ****

Flight 2 (4 Notes)

  • 2000 Château Gloria 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Double decanted 3 1/2 hrs. Bright ruby. Sandlewood and almost a redcurrant note to the fruit. Classic claret profile. Plenty of interest. ****

  • 2000 Château Potensac 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc

Similar tannins to the 96 Poujeaux, but redder fruited. Still quite structured but it’s more acidity than tannin. More approachable too. Quite bright and fresh. ***1/2

  • 2000 Château Lanessan Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

2 bottles with consistent notes. Slightly maderised nose and a stewed, porty palate. Atypical.

  • 2000 Château d'Aiguilhe 90 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux

9/12. Mellow, smooth, a touch of richness on the nose but balanced by a cool acidity. The elegant face of right bank exoticism. Consistent with the previous bottles from this case over the past decade. ***1/2

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 1985 Château Chasse-Spleen 90 Points

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc

Ruby to mid garnet. Proper claret nose. Cedar, cigar box, a smidge of graphite. Fruit on the wain but still harmonious. Cool and poised. Lovely, but time to drink up. ***1/2

  • 1989 Château La Lagune 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Mid ruby. Lovely fragrant red fruited nose. Elegance. Not quite the length but enough interest here. Just enough sweet fruit. Overall an attractive and harmonious package. ****
