One of our members will soon be retiring and moving out of state. She didn’t want to move her entire cellar and so she hosted the group for a cellar diminishment event. We began pulling corks about fifteen minutes before tasters began to arrive. Everyone brought a dish so we had plenty to nosh on as we casually sipped the wines in a walk around tasting format.
Pale color. Honeyed melon fruit qualities on the nose and palate, developing an interesting herbal quality...something along the lines of basil or perhaps tarragon. Very nice. (SS)

More similar to the 2005 than the 2006, with ripe cherry and leather elements. ripe red berry fruit on the palate. Nice, but I preferred the 2005 and 2006 by a bit. (SS)

Black cherry, leather and dark berry fruit tones. Similar to the 2004, with soft tannins and good fruit. Perhaps just a bit more structure than the 2004. 90+ pts. (SS)

Aromas of cassis, mint and chocolate. Structured, but perhaps not as structured as I'd have guessed it would be. Mixed blue and black fruit qualities with oak spice on the back end. Very classy. (SS)

One of the highlights of the evening for me. Currant and saddle leather aromas give way to cedar, herb and dusty earth qualities. Wonderful depth and nuance. Plum and leather on the palate. Lingering finish. I see no benefit to holding this any longer. (SS)

More red-fruited than dark, with a terrific resiny/eucalyptusy quality. I am enjoying that greenish quality here and the depth of the fruit. Balanced, with a lingering finish. (SS)

Plum, raisin and currant notes. Youthful, full-bodied and a bit tannic yet, this still needs time. A bit more raisin than I would like, but otherwise enjoyable. 90+ pts. (R&D)

2002 Mumm Napa Blanc de Blancs Vintage
USA, California, Napa Valley
Toasted nut and orchard fruit aromas to start, carrying through on the palate. There’s a bit of marshmallow on the palate as well. Excellent, though this faded a bit by the end of the evening, at which point I preferred the NV BdB tasted alongside. (SS)

NV Mumm Napa Blanc de Blancs Reserve

Similar to the 2002, with marshmallow and orchard fruit qualities. Balanced and very enjoyable. Whereas the ‘02 faded a bit over the course of the evening, this gained intensity. Delightful. (SS)

2007 Domaine Carneros Brut Late Disgorged
USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
Soft mousse. Generic and nondescript, adjectives which did not change when I revisited this later in the evening. I suspect this wasn’t a pristine bottle, as it just wasn’t giving up much of anything and should have been much better. (SS)
