Introduction

A really lovely small line-up of wines with half the group over CNY (COVID restrictions still being in place)

Flight 1 - WHITES (3 Notes)

  • 2008 Vincent Dancer Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

This is drinking beautifully now. I loved the nose of this, with its classic Meursault Perrieres aromas of cream and freshly churned butter, fresh cut apples, white fruit, and a nice dose of flinty, stony mineral. The palate was really on-point too - soft, round, yet with a sneaky energy and definition to it, with well-cut but superbly integrated acidity and a lovely sense of minerality fused though its pure, limpid mouthful of white fruit, lemons and flint. There was an effortless sense of almost Grand Cru depth and intensity to it all, wed to a grace and elegance that really belied its power. A lovely Meursault Perrieres, drinking beautifully now.

  • 2006 Mount Mary Chardonnay Dr John Chardonnay 93 Points

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

This was very yummy, especially for something as mature as a 2006 new world Chardonnay. It had an entrancing nose, with salty popcorn, butter and honey, alongside subtle aromas of stone fruit and red apple. Very attractive. The palate was where this shone though. Round, fleshy, yummy, with delicious flavours of sweet red apples and ripe lemons; all lined with a nice amount of acidity and a good kick of mineral leading into a long, creamy finish - this was a deliciously, well integrated wine. Very complete, very pleasing, and drinking really nicely now. Wow - this could have passed for a good Burgundy.

  • 2017 Domaine Jean-Michel Gaunoux Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Lovely, and starting to develop nicely. The nose was very attractive, with wafts of sweet cream and brioche, sweet apples and lemon curd, chalk and flint, all laced with a little white floral touch. Very Meursault. Very Perrieres. With time, some sweeter tropical notes came out at the sides too. The palate was still youthful, but already absolutely delicious, showing a wonderful clarity to its notes of white fruit, red apples and little tropical pineapple notes, all these lined with lovely reams of juicy lemony acidity and stony mineral as the wine stretched away into a beautifully long finish.

Flight 2 - REDS (2 Notes)

  • 2016 Joseph Drouhin Gevrey-Chambertin 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Double decanted and left for an hour, this was absolutely lovely and drinking wonderfully well. It had a really pretty nose, with classic Gevrey notes of red cherries, mineral and earth, garlanded with a little kiss of spice and florals. With time, some ferrous metal and orange peel started coming out as well. The palate was just a little tight at first, but opened up very nicely with fresh, well-cut notes of red cherries and juicy strawberries laced with a touch of rose petals. Elegant, juicy, absolutely drinkable - this was all very pretty, delicious stuff. Good finish for a village too, with a trail of mineral and a little kiss of spice and florals drifting away on the back palate. A lovely, elegant, almost feminine Gevrey village, just starting to be opened for business.

  • 2016 Domaine Duroché Gevrey-Chambertin 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Delicious, and really starting to come into a nice drinking window. I loved the nose on this: classic Gevrey, in a slightly less delicate mold than the Drouhin village that preceded it, with notes of earth and wilting roses, cherries and wild berries, and just a hint of mineral at the edges of the bouquet. The palate was absolutely delicious. Juicy, generous, open, with fresh lip smacking orange acidity and the finest tannins. These still gave a little sense of grip to deliciously addictive flavours of red cherries and berries, infused with notes of spice and mineral, and then just a little kiss of florals at the end. Not the greatest finish on this bottle, but there was definitely a very nice sense of substance to it for a village. This felt very nicely integrated, and very satisfying indeed. A very gulpable wine, and starting to show beautifully now.
