Flight 1 (5 Notes)

Sojourn flies under the radar sometimes, but is some of the most consistently excellent Pinot Noir in Sonoma at a solid QPR. The tasting room is right off the plaza in downtown Sonoma. Highly recommended.

  • NV Sojourn Brut 94 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

    (10/10/2022)

Love this wine. Impressive for a first sparkling offering. Sojourn has made great wine from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for so long, so it shouldn't be surprising. Balanced and complex.

  • 2020 Sojourn Chardonnay Durell Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    (10/10/2022)

I'm not normally a fan of oaked Chardonnay, but I enjoyed this. 40% new oak and 85% malolactic fermentation. Nice balance of acid and oak, with milky texture and good complexity. Good on its own and would be great with food.

  • 2021 Sojourn Pinot Noir Wohler Vineyard Russian River Valley 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    (10/10/2022)

Red fruit - strawberry and cherry. Medium-plus acid that makes the wine refreshing and drinkable. Fruit is balanced by rhubarb and a little spice and orange zest. Nice length.

  • 2021 Sojourn Pinot Noir Gap's Crown Vineyard Sonoma Coast 95 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    (10/10/2022)

Complex, with fruit and savory flavors in balance. (Blue fruit, baking spice, touch of wood.) Bright acidity. Long finish. Still tight in the mid-palate; give it several years, like 2024 or 2025 at a minimum. Very good and such a great QPR - year after year, this is some of the best Pinot Noir to be had in Sonoma for under $100.

Spent 11 months in 50% new french oak.

  • 2019 Sojourn Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

    (10/10/2022)

Very well made but middle-of-the-road Napa cab. Raspberry and chocolate cake, velvety, bright with well-balanced acid. Good wine, but doesn't stand out within the Sojourn portfolio quite as much as the Pinots.

Flight 2 (5 Notes)

Extradimensional just started offering tastings with winemaker Hardy Wallace (of Dirty & Rowdy fame) at a shared tasting facility along Highway 12 between Sonoma (city) and Santa Rosa. Hardy was a terrific host, and was energetic, knowledgable, and hospitable. His wines are truly unique, with a brightness and energy that stands out. He says his goal is to make wines at the intersection of "fine wine" and "fun wine," and he succeeds. We got to taste five very different wines - rose, white, orange, traditional red, and a unique blend of 5 red + white grapes. Despite the differences, it's hard not to get an almost tactile feel of electric energy on each of these.

After the tasting, Hardy walked us back to his production facility and we tasted barrel samples of a few young wines, including a Merlot and Cab Franc that he is thinking of blending into the most unorthodox (but almost certainly delicious) Right Bank blend I can imagine.

Flight 3 (7 Notes)

Terrific tasting at Bedrock's historic tasting room in downtown Sonoma. Definitely check it out if you've never been.

  • 2017 Under The Wire Sparkling Chardonnay Alder Springs Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino

    (10/11/2022)

Oh wow. Refreshing tart acid, sourdough tang that runs from front to back. Very fine bubbles, almost like the tactile feel of Pop Rocks. Really delicious and drinkable. Creamy texture. Long finish. Love this wine.

  • 2015 Bedrock Wine Co. Cuvée Karatas 91 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

    (10/11/2022)

Bright, smooth and creamy. Fruit is sweet honeydew rind, but medium-plus acidity balances the fruit. Some softness and well integrated. Ethereal and lifted, but still with a stiff backbone.

I like it, but not wifey's jam.

Serve with seafood - oysters or paella?

  • 2014 Bedrock Wine Co. Heritage Wine Evangelho Vineyard 91 Points

USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Contra Costa County

    (10/11/2022)

I want to love Bedrock Evangelho. I consistently like it, but can't bring myself to love it.

Ripe red/mixed fruit, dates, black tea. Burst of fruit and acid up front but drops off quickly. The balance, intensity, and complexity are there, but the length isn't.

8 years in, this wine is delicious and intense up front, but drops off quickly. Some wine has a "hole in the middle" - this has a hole in the middle AND the end. But where it starts is really excellent. If the delicious start carried through to a long finish, this would be a near-perfect wine.

  • 2020 Bedrock Wine Co. Bedrock Vineyard Heritage 93 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley

    (10/12/2022)

Tart fruit: fresh underripe blueberry, raspberry, plum skin, undertone of vanilla. Still tannic; give it some time. Long finish. Drank on its own, but calls for food. Perfect Thanksgiving wine with a smoked turkey.

  • 2019 Bedrock Wine Co. Syrah Calicò 92 Points

    USA, California

    (10/12/2022)

Inky but balanced. Tannic, dark. Serve with red beans & rice & spicy sausage.

Tasted next to the 2019 Bedrock Bien Nacido Syrah: this one darker and more direct, while the other was more elegant and complex. Both are good.

  • 2019 Bedrock Wine Co. Syrah X-Block Bien Nacido Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley

    (10/12/2022)

Nose: like an old lodge in the West. Bright acid that lasts. Elegant fruit. Long finish. Serve with cassoulet.

Tasted next to the 2019 Bedrock Calico Syrah: this one was more elegant and complex, while the Calico was darker and more direct.

  • 2016 Bedrock Wine Co. Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard 94 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Moon Mountain District

    (10/12/2022)

Love this wine. Tastes like a Bedrock field blend (not a traditional Napa cab), only more intense.

Great balance, complexity, intensity, and length. Soft, sweet, herbal/vegetal nose. Super bright. Medium-plus tannins; drinking well now but could go a while.

This isn't a steak Cabernet - try it with a beef stew or bolognese.
