Cutlery Optional

Introduction

Great meal at Cutlery Optional where we got to experience the depth of south Indian cuisine. Authentic Indian dishes have proven to be difficult to find both in the UK and Singapore, and I really enjoyed the experience of such new flavours. Everything was very good but my personal favourites were the prawn masala vadai and the GOAT biryani.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • NV Chartogne-Taillet Champagne Cuvée Sainte Anne 90 Points

    France, Champagne

2019 base, disgorged March 2022, 4g/l dosage. Usually a big fan of this cuvee but this edition is not quite in place yet. Heady fruit but lacking cut and focus at the moment, but the potential is there to develop into a more cohesive wine.

  • NV Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Cuvée Rubis 92 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

Disgorged July 2021. Round and creamy strawberries held together by good tension and acidity. A proper food champagne, Vilmart is always a winner for both champagne nerds and casual drinkers.

  • 2019 Domaine Testut Chablis Vieilles Vignes 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis

Not familiar with this producer but this showed great depth for its level. From a parcel that is 45 years old and located in front of Blanchot. Generous mouthfeel for a Chablis but had a very good acidic spine.

  • 2020 Grosset Riesling Polish Hill Clare Valley 93 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Read some notes recently that said these might be better young so decided to open one for a test drive. This was literally drinking battery acid on the first day as it barely had any fruit, saved the remainder for the second day and it was absolutely singing. Pure, chiselled citrus fruit with beautiful weight and texture, truly a pleasure to get a top of its class wine for less than SGD60.

  • 2019 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Kabinett 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Absolutely delicious like many other 2019 Rieslings that I have had. The common thread seems to be mineral, citrus fruits with a slight hint of tropical notes, but with great tension and restraint. A little pradikat creep here but still superb. Hard to keep my hands off these.

  • 2018 Quinta do Zambujeiro Monte do Zambujeiro 88 Points

    Portugal, Alentejano, Vinho Regional Alentejano

Bought this from a wine fair on the same day. A fruit-forward and simple wine with globs of dark red fruit. Almost Bojo-like, this was lighter in body compared to the other wines in the range that I tasted. Liked this more than the higher level bottlings as this was aged in used oak barrels. Not my preferred style but others seemed to like this more.
