One of the most generous friend's birthday celebration and true to form, he provided my first DRC experience. The rest of the line-up wasn't too shabby either, the best producers stood out since they have a way to create that lifted nose and sensual elegance that only Burgundies can have.
I haven't had many experiences with Leroy but I totally get the magic. Incredibly intoxicating nose to die, everything was seamlessly balanced. Such an elegant and seductive palate, the fruit was layered with so much depth. I don't quite know how to explain it but the wine had so much character, didn't come across as completely clean with a little wildness but it just worked beautifully. One of the best wines that I have tasted.

Slightly overshadowed by the Leroy but this was superb for me as well. Remarkably youthful in terms of the nose and the bright ruby colour. The vanilla on the nose needs more time to integrate but again this wine had an incredibly silky texture. Someone more experienced said that despite the youthful appearance the tannins did show some development. Very charming wine with plenty left in the tank. Scoring this on the conservative side today but so much potential.

From magnum. Felt older than the other two wines with autumnal and ferrous notes, some tea leaves with rustic fruit. Got better with air as it became more suave and elegant. Thankful to have tried this but weakest of the flight.

Had the 2001 before so got the MCQ on maker and plot right, but thought this was from a warmer vintage. Had some hints of botrytis, the sheer weight and power of the wine was in plain sight. Rich and unctuous, exotic white fruit, showed some development with some honey notes. Impressive but almost too much for me.

Rich and broad wine with ripe yellow fruit, but had good acidity and tension. Was thinking Puligny from a warm vintage.

Another wine with a lifted, intoxicating nose and a silky texture. Oak is still a little prominent on the nose but loved the rose petals. Everyone was in Vosne for this, superb purity of fruit and a seamlessly integrated palate. Some Tremblays that I have were surly but this was showing very well in its primary phase.

Not the biggest fan of this producer but this was incredibly good. Lovely dark-fruited nose that could compete with the best, the oak was fully integrated here. Palate had some tertiary notes of soy and tea leaves but in no danger of falling over a cliff anytime soon. Very complete wine. The person who brought this said this was the last bottle and was by far the best, so probably some bottle variation going on.

My contribution. Some spice on the nose with a bit of cola, meatiness that made some guess Gevrey. Not as perfumed as the top producers but liked the palate which was able to acquit itself well. Wood became more evident with air. Still rather structured and backward, will keep my other bottle for a good few years. Very good potential.

Similar to the Suchots from the same vintage that I tried at 67PM last month. Silky fruit with classic Vosne spice and a little earth but quite unyielding at the moment. Superb balance though, just needs more time for the wine to come out of its shell and become more expressive again.

Under normal cork but still slightly advanced like the '08 the other week unfortunately. Cloudy colour, some barnyard notes. A perfectly middle-of-the-road drink but again a relative disappointment for the pedigree.

1996 Henriot Champagne Cuvée des Enchanteleurs Brut 92 Points
France, Champagne
From magnum. Dark golden in colour but still very fresh and vivacious despite some bruised apple notes. Bigger, richer style of champagne.
