Introduction

We had a group of ten gather for the regular tasting of Luis' group at Tilia (BT,ML,JP,JG,GA,CG,JG,DS,KB, LD). The theme was the ususal, "bring a very good bottle". We had a very good mix of wines tonight that paired well with each other and the menu. Thanks to Steven for hosting us as always.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • NV Palmer & Co Champagne Rosé Reserve 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Pale salmon color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. This was quite nice; a delicate wine offering a suave mix of light red berries, yeast, and strawberry pastries; creamy texture, cherry and a light to moderately toasted finish. Nice balance and a finessed style I gravitate toward.

  • 2017 Domaine Roulot Bourgogne-Aligoté 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne-Aligoté

Pale gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Lean and a bit more aggressive acidity, rather sour lemon and lime, a touch weedy, mineral, more sharp on presentation..

  • 2014 Xavier Monnot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Light plus gold color. Dranka glass over 2 hours. I'm a bit conflicted by this wine. There is much to like here, toasty oak barrels, lemon, tangerine, medium bodied, but lots of matchstick, going to almost burnt rubber character though was a bit much for me. I did not find it blowing off tonight over 2 hours. That dominant reduction overshadowed the core of the wine Others enjoyed more than me. A little (is just fine) of that quality goes a long way in my book. 90+(+?)pts.

  • 2016 Xavier Monnot Meursault Les Chevalières 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Light gold color. Drank a glass over 90 minutes. This is quite good; lovely nose with sea air and beeswax, lemon-lime, slate on the nose. The palate shows some breadth, deeper with little richness, sea shells, lemon and lime, peach hints, slate, with really great, tingly minerality on the back end. Nicely done.

  • 2011 Antica Terra Pinot Noir Antikythera 94 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

Medium red color. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes. Wow, this nose really pops; filled with immense and complex floral character, potpourri, rose petals, dried leaves, cinnamon, baking spice, very lifted on the nose. The palate has intensity with excellent acid and crispness, medium bodied with black cherry, raspberry compote, hints of menthol and the sandalwood on top of a juice blood orange infusion on the mid to back end. Delicious! Love the way the '11's are drinking.

  • 2012 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Justice Vineyard 92 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

Medium dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 2 hours. This started a bit slow, but really built over an hour. Deeply woodsy and spiced on the nose and palate, darker fruits on the nose; the palate is medium full bodied, satiny, deep red berries with a splash of boysenberry, earth and spice. The finish is a bit sharp at first, but evens out well ovr time.

  • 2000 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark red color witha 3mm clear edge. PNP, drank a glass over 75 minutes. Lovely as always, I truly love this vintage of Beaucastel. Savory and juicy, filled with leather and expressive garrigue and violets, cassis, black raspberry and blood orange on the nose. The palate is unmistakably CdP, well integrated, incense, spices, garrigue, juicy dark fruits, leather, mouthwatering acidity, medium full bodied and long on the finish. Just a touch of prune and olive shows on the finish after 90 minutes.

  • 2000 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de mon Aïeul 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark red color, 12mm transional edge. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes. Leather, savory, high toned spices, ground tobacco, black cherry and kirsch. The palate is more full bodied, kirsch, black cherry, plum, wonderful spcies, leather and dried herbs on a full body. Bigger and bolder than the '00 Beaucastel. Really good, though not as impressive as some killer bottles a few years back.

  • 2009 Inglenook Rubicon 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

Very dark red/purple color with a 3mm clear edge. PNP, drank a glass over an hour. There's a really lovely berry nose; cassis, raspberry, plum, tobacco, gravel, and earth. The palate is harmonious and shows perfect balance, soft texture, pretty dark fruits, wood spice, cocoa nibs, and good length. A sneaky almost understated wine that is so well put together, classy and very Bordeaux-like.

  • 2012 Quivet Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Kenefick Ranch 88 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Deep purple color. Followed a glass over an hour. Big and ripe, but green nose, all black fruits, pretty intense. The palate is really extrracted, ultra sappy, blackberry liqueur, Port-like, oak, full bodied with nice soft tannins, but showing the heat on the mid and back end. I know a lot people will likely still enjoy this. For me this is a tough style to begin with as it just doesn't have the kind of balance I prefer. To that point, I don't think this weill be served well by further aging - and was probably better a few years ago. Drink up.
