Introduction

CPSchoeff generously provided most of the wines so he had a headstart on some of the blinds, overall a good mix of styles and expressions for riesling.

Flight 1 - Blind and Dry (6 Notes)

  • 2021 Desire Lines Riesling Experimental Series #10: Old Durney Massa

USA, California, Central Coast, Carmel Valley

First wine, lightest color and guessed for youngest in the lineup (correct) but that was about as far as I got. Tons of slate and minerally citrus on the nose, more fruit forward on the palate with a whiff of petrol. Fairly short finish, this needs some time to open up.

  • 2012 Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein Winninger Uhlen Riesling "L" Laubach

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Wine two, this was much more developed than the first wine, with much riper fruit and well into tropical territory, maybe guava or passionfruit? On the palate it reminded me of pineapple gummies, with some chenin wooliness thrown in there. This was the most opulent of the dry wines for me.

  • 2019 Sabelli-Frisch Riesling Obie Curtis Vineyard

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley

Wine three, this initially started out with much more citrus and a hint of complex sugar/honey, with some herbs in the background. As it warmed up/opened up I was mostly getting a distinct dill note which is always really intriguing to me when you get riesling with herbs, I had one which had horseradish notes. Initially my WOTN, but retasting towards the end of the night I found it overwhelmed by the dill and it lost some complexity, definitely keep it more chilled.

  • 2016 Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein Winninger Uhlen Riesling "L" Laubach

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Wine four, this was the most in line with what I expect from a classic riesling. Lots of slate and apple, you could smell the acid and minerality. Full orchard fruit on the palate, with tingly acid.

  • 2015 Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein Winninger Uhlen Riesling "L" Laubach

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Wine five, I think this was the highest acid for me, tingly veering on uncomfortable. Very similar notes to wine four, maybe a little bit of petrol thrown in? I would say this needs more time compared to most of the other wines we had for the acid to calm down a bit.

  • 2019 Hermann J. Wiemer Dry Riesling

USA, New York, Finger Lakes, Seneca Lake

Wine six, this fit right in with the german rieslings and could have fooled me, there was really only one pick for an outlier (3). Ripe apple with a hint of petrol on the nose, after a few minutes picked up on some white florals/honeysuckle. On the palate very ripe lemon, maybe lemon curd in with the florals. Very good showing for this wine.

Flight 2 - Seen and Off Dry (3 Notes)

  • 2019 Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Wine seven, non blind. First up of the off dry, this was mostly sweet fruit on the nose for me, on the palate it developed more into ripe oranges and maybe honeycrisp apple? Very well integrated for being relatively young, this was the easiest drinking of the off drys.

  • 2019 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Wine eight, my contribution. Getting complex sugar - maybe honey or caramel? Lots of sweet fruit - definitely palate fatigued at this point. I wrote electric sweet citrus, this had the acid and sugar turned up a notch and was well integrated for how much more it had to offer.

Edit: Day 2 with a fresh palate, this has juicy clementines and lime blossom going all out with a finish that reminds me of cream soda? Definitely came together more after being open a day, exciting to think where this will be with more time.

  • 2020 Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Wine nine, amazing what a difference there was between the 19 and 20 vintages of this, 19 was drinking really easily and this was still pretty disjointed. It has all the right parts of florals, fruit, and minerality, just needs some more time for them all to come together.
