Introduction

Not sure if it was the selection of producers or maybe I was on an off-day, but not a lot stood out to me - lots of wines that weren't interesting enough to write detailed notes. A couple of gems though, and I really like the '19 vintage

Flight 1 (19 Notes)

  • 2021 Rocche Costamagna Langhe Nebbiolo Roccardo 88 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

Jolly, fruit-forward. A touch of menthol bitterness. On the simple side but tasty.

  • 2019 Rocche Costamagna Barolo 87 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Subtle, clear and transparent but also a little dilute, uninteresting. Red apple, a menthol note. Just OK

  • 2019 Rocche Costamagna Barolo Rocche Dell'Annunziata 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Now the Rocche Costamagna house style makes sense - it needs this level of concentration to come together. The essence of La Morra: transparent, lightness of touch, perfumed. Just the right amount of depth to carry those complex aromas. Red apple, spice, flowers. Clean and delicate, persistent. Not big but makes an impression.

  • 2019 Germano Ettore Barolo Prapò 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Big, burly, tarry bastard. Balsamic notes, the perfume is musky. Depth and concentration to the darker fruit, angry tannins. Fills a niche if this is your thing - it's not so much mine but you've got to respect it.

  • 2019 Luigi Pira Barolo Vigna Rionda 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Wonderful. Incredibly perfumed, waves of incense, cherries and strawberries- but so pure and clean. Really alive and vibrant, layers of fine tannins. And just delicious even now. Makes you feel a bit poetic...

  • 2019 Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cerequio 96 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

WOTN- such depth and complexity, this is an eye-roller with incredible perfume, perfectly pure and clean fruit. So light on its feet but concentrated. Drinking fantastically now, there's so much going but it's still coherent- tannins really not that assertive for such a young wine but I think that's more because everything else is so stunning. Wow.

  • 2019 Francesco Rinaldi e Figli Barolo Cannubi 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Very Rinaldi: perfumed, exciting nose. High toned and lifted, but really quite insubstantial on the palate. It could well be that this fills out with time - and of course I sampled this at an embryonic stage - but it does seem to lack concentration and the fruit weight one may expect.

  • 2019 Boasso Barolo Gabutti 84 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Very strange producer and the rep looked pretty uncomfortable trying to sell it! Rich and soupy, very little typicity. Not sure what the point is here or who's buying it

  • 2019 Paolo Conterno Barolo Ginestra 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Really big step up from the rest of the Conterno range and good value for the quality. Darker toned, concentrated, breadth and richness on the palate but still a classic profile. Some aromatic lift which really elevates the whole concern. Excellent for this style.

  • 2019 Enzo Boglietti Barolo del comune di La Morra 87 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Deep balsamic nose, clean and attractive but nothing distinctive or compelling.

  • 2019 Enzo Boglietti Barolo Boiolo 87 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Balsamic, tar and menthol dominate: fruit slightly lacking, just a bit of a rough and unyielding aromatic profile. Not inviting or particularly interesting.

  • 2019 Enzo Boglietti Barolo Brunate 89 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Deep balsamic notes, which seem to be a Boglietti staple. Red apple and spice join the party, it's a complex but still quite challenging aromatic profile: maybe this softens with time but it's rather uninviting at the outset. Difficult to love.

  • 2019 Germano Ettore Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba 88 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

A deep, musky nose and tarry palate. It does what it says on the tin, but strikes me as a bit of a caricature of the Serralunga style: all the iron fist, not so much of the velvet glove.

  • 2019 Germano Ettore Barolo Prapò 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Very tarry and balsamic, a perfumed musky note that adds serious interest. Good depth and concentration, big big tannins.

  • 2019 Luigi Pira Barolo Serralunga 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

It's a bruiser: big tannins, big body, clean but overall pretty massive right now. There's a lot of potential waiting to unfurl, but give it 10 years.

  • 2019 Paolo Conterno Barolo Riva del Bric 89 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Dark fruited, concentrated and tasty. It has a rubbery note, not much in the way of lifted aromatics - big on the palate but surprisingly drinkable right now (not that it's a particularly great idea to do so). Kind of charming in the way a Staffordshire Bull Terrier might be.

  • 2019 Francesco Rinaldi e Figli Barolo 88 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Would be a great ringer for a high-quality Xinomavro - a tomato note, cherry and violet aromatics. The nose promises a lot but it's quite flat and dilute on the palate in comparison.

  • 2019 Francesco Rinaldi e Figli Barolo Le Brunate 89 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Heady, lifted and compelling on the nose: a great balance of red fruit and florals, but again it lacks concentration and depth on the palate unfortunately. Not bad, not great.

  • 2019 Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Very tasty. Maybe simple but it has rich fruit, a balance of elegance and bitterness, a good finish and an overall impression of power and persistence.
