Introduction

Having one skier in the family provided an excuse for an early spring visit to this beautiful locale. We sampled the following wines over the course of several meals and a mini-tasting. Aspen is an excellent food and wine destination if you are headed to the Colorado Rockies.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2019 Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Blanc Brézé

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur

    (3/27/2023)

Opened and decanted. Yellow tint. Complex aromas of vanillin, lanolin, and citrus. Full bodied with some obvious oak, but also lemon oil, a touch of soil, and powerful, penetrating acids. Much too young but nonetheless riveting. We will sample the second half of the bottle tomorrow.

By the next evening, the wood had receded somewhat and the wine was all brisk grapefruit and lemon with terrific texture.

  • 2009 Rene Rostaing Côte-Rôtie Côte Blonde

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

    (3/27/2023)

Given 4 hours of air before pouring. Deep, almost opaque ruby. Forward scents of blackberry jam and herbs, smoke, and later, blueberry. Powerful, dense, and saline with great framing acidity, earth, and moderate tannins. Unbelievably impressive, youthful, and vigorous-I easily could have called it Cornas blind. This may take another 15 to 20 years to fully blossom.

The next day the fruit is even sweeter, and now it has some citrus peel as well. Marvelous.

  • 2021 Veyder-Malberg Grüner Veltliner Liebedich

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

    (3/28/2023)

Pale yellow. Aromatic, high pitched herbs and citrus on the nose. Light, bright acidity, citrus, and very good minerality.

  • 2019 Franz Hirtzberger Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Kirchweg

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

    (3/28/2023)

Medium yellow. Lower pitched aromas with some pineapple. Full and glycerine. Rich, ripe stone and tropical fruit, noticeable residual sugar, good acidity, and a lot of earth on the finish. I don’t really care for the sweetness.

  • 2020 Weiser-Künstler Trabener Gaispfad Riesling

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    (3/29/2023)

Light yellow. Extremely complex aromatics-citrus, high toned distillate, florality, and botanical herbs. Just the nose evoked aquavit and Sauvignon Blanc at times. Medium bodied, dry, penetrating acidity, and powerful. Grapefruit and herbs are joined by more tropical guava and a soil-filled finish. Very young but exciting wine that leaves the palate aquiver.

  • 2005 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe aux Moines Vieille Vigne

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

    (3/29/2023)

Opened and aerated for 3 hours before serving. Red center with maturing rim. A great old Burgundy nose to start with char, earth, faded strawberry, and moist undergrowth. Subsequently, more green tones took over. Lovely light weight and fruit/soil mix with excellent acidity and modest remaining tannins. In a very good place and surprisingly open for a 2005. My only disappointment is that it did not noticeably improve with air; rather, the fruit faded a bit and it started to become slightly astringent.
