New-world

Introduction

A friend once joked that whenever he tried to organise a new-world night, people would always be overseas, have other commitments etc. Had the same experience but glad to have assembled a good mix of wines with good company

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2020 O'Leary Walker Riesling Polish Hill River 91 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Polish Hill River

Brought as an extra. Similar vibes to Grosset’s Polish Hill, very taut and stern at first with a steely minerality. Opened up to show stony yellow fruit and a slight honey note. Fantastic value.

  • 2017 Marie-Thérèse Chappaz Grain Arvine de Fully 87 Points

    Switzerland, Valais, Fully

My contribution, not exactly new-world but interesting enough. A very large-scaled wine that had fruit that was a little too tropical without sufficient acidity. Too dense and over the top for me despite some salinity being present.

  • 2015 Cristom Pinot Noir Marjorie Vineyard 92 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

Great restraint but still identifiable as a US Pinot with dark red cherry fruit. Guessed 2015/16 Oregon since it wasn’t too jammy, so didn't think Cali. Was quite earthy too so if it wasn’t a new-world night it would’ve been a tough call between US or Burgundy. Pleasurable and contemplative at the same time, in a good spot with some development.

  • 2017 Rhys Alesia Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains 90 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Brought for a friend. Slightly more fruit-forward than the Cristom with riper cherry and raspberry fruit, quite typical of a Californian Pinot. Still quite primary but drinking well

  • 2014 Radio-Coteau Syrah Dusty Lane 93 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Brought for a friend. Resolutely old-world, even had some brett on the nose that was pleasant for me but others disliked. Fantastic restraint without any signs of jamminess or alcohol. An excellent ringer for a northern Rhone, a wine with plenty of character and interest.

  • 2019 Bodega Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino 88 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza

Guessed this to be either a South American Cab or an Oz Shiraz. Very deep colour, inky black and purple fruit that was rather monolithic. Dense and full-bodied, I dislike such concentration in wines but this will appeal to others.
