Bring an interesting wine theme

Introduction

Casual wine night generously hosted by Paul, always glad to meet new wine friends and try wines that I otherwise wouldn't have had a chance to. My rationale for the two wines being interesting was that they transcended their region / grape varietal.

  • NV Henri Giraud Champagne Grand Cru Fût de Chêne MV17

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Rather oxidative without much bubbles, might not have been the most representative bottle.

  • 2017 Domaine des Tours Vaucluse 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vaucluse

Brought this for a friend. Didn't like this the last time when it was popped and poured, so gave it a fair bit of air. this time around which helped the jamminess to mellow out on the nose. Sweet red fruit on the palate, in an almost cloying fashion rather than a sappy, elegant way. Can see the parallels that Comando G are trying to emulate. Everyone liked this but guessed it to be older, perhaps due to the cloudy colour. Jamminess came back after some time.

  • 2018 Montes Purple Angel 86 Points

    Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley

Couldn't get past the heavy coffee, confected dark fruit note for this. Guessed 2019 South American Malbec since it showed similarly to the Catena Zapata I tried earlier in the week. Most managed to land in South America for this but not the grape. Hard pass.

  • 2017 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino 88 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Someone told me (erroneously) that there was a Burgundy in the line-up so I thought this was it. Coffee and vanilla notes on the nose, the warm vintage wasn't obvious here which was a good thing. Fine but quite boring.

  • 2020 Purcari Rară Neagră Nocturne 87 Points

    Moldova, Ștefan Vodă Region

Most guessed Pinot for this including myself, I thought that it was from Germany as this reminded me of the Molitor I tried last week with the slightly smoky nose. Not very interesting on the palate with clipped finish.

  • 2014 Domaine Pascal Cotat Sancerre La Grande Côte 91 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

My contribution which showed better than the last time as I opened this at lunchtime for dinner. This was a crowd favourite with the mixture of high acid and ripe, honeyed fruit. Some very good guesses included Jura Chard, and one person actually nailed it as a Sancerre which was quite impressive.

  • 2019 Penfolds Shiraz RWT Bin 798 86 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Immediately identifiable as Oz Shiraz which most people guessed correctly. Large-scaled wine that had heavy mocha overtones, cloyingly sweet fruit. Impenetrable now, couldn't take more than a sip of this.

  • 2020 Sadie Family T'Voetpad 91 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland

Reductive nose so I was quite confident this was a new-world Chardonnay mimicking a Burgundy. Reminded me a lot of 00 EGW that I tried previously. When the reductiveness blew off, the fruit was rather ripe for a Chardonnay so I couldn't quite place this until someone said this might be a South African Chenin which made sense. Well-made wine with good acidity despite the waxy and round texture.
