Introduction

An opportunity to try the 2022's again after my visit a few months ago was not to be sniffed at so off I trotted…

Flight 1 (33 Notes)

  • 2022 Château La Garde Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

gooseberry, a little lime, green apple in support. Juicy, fleshy, fruit a little muted and slight sour on the palate, textured grip is drying and a little coarse. Slight non intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish but this is a bit meh for me

  • 2022 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Cream, gooseberry, a little sweet spice, slight leesy notes, tiny stone fruit almost peachy in fact. Nice nose. Juicy, fleshy, tangy, persistent silky burr supports the fruit long, serious. Nice

  • 2022 Clos des Lunes Lune d'Argent

    France, Bordeaux

Medium minus intensity aromas, a little green, touches of lime, muted gooseberry and cats pee in support. In the mouth it's. a little tart and bitter, feels like to much oak here. Nah.

  • 2022 Clos Cantenac Bordeaux Rosé L'Exubérance Rosé

    France, Bordeaux, Bordeaux Rosé

A little subdued berry fruit, touch of sweet spice, juicy, fleshy wild red berry fruit, a little burr, simple, okay

  • 2022 Château La Garde

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Ripe blackcurrant, touch of cream, plums, violets, sweet spice, smidge of plain chocolate as well. Clean though. Savoury , liquorice initially then tight drying though softly textured tannic grip persists pas the fruit which sits very much in the background. Meh on the palate unless the wood settles down

  • 2022 Château Belgrave

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Savoury blackcurrant, sweet spice, a little cedar, tiny pyrazine note. Medium plus intensity acidity, a little cream joins the muted fruit, tannins are drying though, again, quite silky. Simple but okay.

  • 2022 Château Haut-Bailly

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

A little milk chocolate joins plums and blackcurrants on the nose backed by cedar, sweet spice and a tiny pinch of alcoholic based prickle here as well. In the mouth it is juicy, plenty of fruit here to marry to the grippy, drying woody tannins that are slightly coarse flour textured. All travel long aided by a little alcohol warmth. Bit on the big side but approachable and yum

  • 2022 Château Beychevelle

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Muted black fruits; wild blackcurrant especially, sweet spice, cedar, a little savoury note evident with time, feels almost a little rustic on the nose. On the palate it has medium plus intensity acidity which lenes freshness, savoury, wild black fruits (again focus is on blackcurrant but there are some brambles, plums here as well), backed by super persistent, slightly chalky tannic grip. Yum.

  • 2022 Domaine de Chevalier

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Blackcurrant and berry, cherry and plums, a little violet, sweet spice and cedar in support with a smidge of plain chocolate. Juicy, plenty of black fruits here as a well, talc textured tannins persist long, cedar, sweet spice on the finish. Better than my recollections of the EP tasting but alcohol warmth intrudes a little on the finish.

  • 2022 Château Phélan Ségur

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Sweet spice, black hued fruits; plums, black currant, cedar, plentiful tannins rather close down the palate and proves more woody than anything tasted so far, chalky textured, the fruit struggles beneath this wooden blanket. Hmm.

  • 2022 Château Pedesclaux

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Blackberries, plums, sweet spice, a little violet and a touch of liquorice. Medium plus intensity acidity, again it's more berries and plums than blackcurrant for me here, woody , grippy drying tannins chase the fruit around the palate joined by a little alcohol warmth. Hmm, okay in a slightly big way

  • 2022 Château Lilian Ladouys

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Plums earth, sweet spice, a little almost saline notes, cream, blackcurrant and mint in the background. Interesting nose and a bit of an outliner so far. Savoury with quite bitter tannins on the palate which, unfortunately, dominates proceedings. The nose shows promise though so time should help.

  • 2022 Château Brane-Cantenac

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Blackcurrant, cream, slight violet , sweet spice, cedar, a little plain chocolate and plum. Juicy, similar flavour profile, plenty of grippy talc textured tannins persists long, past the fruit in fact. Hmm

  • 2022 Château d'Issan Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Oof! Something not quite right here - super herbaceous, green. On the palate more of the same with some sour red berry fruit. FLAW

  • 2022 Clos Cantenac Petit Cantenac

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Medium minus intensity aromas of plums, sweet spice, a little alcohol prickle, touch of red berry underpin. Juicy, fleshy, woody tannins are quite drying, there is a pleasing sense of freshness here. Medium plus length, the tannins seem to lend bitterness on the finish, fruit just about persist joined by slight non-intrusive alcohol warmth. Okay.

  • 2022 Clos Cantenac

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Ripe plums, sweet spice, alcohol prickle, cedar, chocolate, very slight vanilla, it's all a bit bolshy on the nose. Oddly it's a little almost sour on the palate (I feel someone might have been at the tartaric) tannins are woody, slight coarse, red over black fruits, nah

  • 2022 Château de Ferrand

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Fresh red berries with cedar, plum and sweet spice in support. With time a little plain chocolate. Juicy, slightly savoury red and black fruits, talc textured with woody tannins persists with the fruit, touch of alcohol warmth here as well but reasonably well balanced. Okay

  • 2022 Château Corbin St. Émilion Grand Cru

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

A little clay, black plums, sweet spice, alcohol prickle, tiny red berry and almost pencil shaving note here as well. Juicy, fleshy, the red berry fruit more forward on the palate, fine powdery tannins offer a framework rather than dominating, a little plummy underpin. Alcohol warmth is a teensy bit too intrusive though this is otherwise rather pleasant.

  • 2022 Château Pavie Macquin

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Plummy; black over red, a little almost herbaceous underpin, plenty of sweet spice and a fair lump of alcohol prickle which lends a little sourness on the palate. More red than black plums here, tannins are woody, tight, chalky textured. Nah.

  • 2022 Château Larcis Ducasse

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Like the d'Issan earlier this has a slightly off putting herbaceous aroma here, plenty of alcohol prickle, touch of red plum, sweet spice. The alcohol translates to the palate making this feel quite clumsy and unwieldy, talc textured tannins are a little chewy. Meh.

  • 2022 Château Peymouton

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Plums, sweet spice, slight alcohol prickle, touch of red berry fruit, cedar. Simple, clean, red and black hued fruit; plums, berries, talc textured woody tannins, alcohol well controlled, simple, pleasant.

  • 2022 Château Laroque St. Émilion Grand Cru

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Ripe plums, sweet spice, slightly herbaceous underpin, a little cedar and alcohol prickle in the background. Ripe plum fruit on the palate has fruit sweetness, soft powdery tannins persists, quite simple but okay.

  • 2022 Château Clos St. Martin

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Sweet plums and baking spice, touch of cream, very slight caramel and vanilla as well. Quite concentrated on the palate which lends a savoury quality to the plummy fruit, tannins are woody and coarse. Alcohol warmth managed well but it's a bit meh for me.

  • 2022 Château Belair-Monange

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Red and black plums, sweet spice, cedar, a little alcohol prickle lends a savoury quality, a touch of almost wood glue (?!). It proves quite unpleasant on the palate; over-concentrated, thick almost, tannins are drying, coarse flour textured and drying. Nah.

  • 2022 Château Séraphine

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Plums, sweet spice, a red berry underpin, more wood glue (?!), very slight pencil shavings and a fair lick of alcohol. Juicy, savoury, plummy, a little red berry note, plentiful woody tannins are coarse but in support rather than dominating; carries long with alcohol warmth assisting. Woof. Balanced though and the palate is better than the nose. Time

  • 2022 Château Certan de May

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Ripe plums, oak spice, very slight touch of alcohol prickle, simple though pleasant nose. And equally pleasant on the palate, plummy fruit retains it freshness, tannins are softly textured and persist long, alcohol warmth is present but managed. Rather nice.

  • 2022 Château Lagrange (Pomerol)

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Plenty of sweet spice, cedar and chocolate, alcohol over muted black and red plum. Juicy, tangy, but plenty of woody tannins and alcohol rather dominate proceedings here. Nah.

  • 2022 Château La Fleur-Pétrus

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

concentrated ripe plums, sweet oak spice, with time a little perfumed uplift lends prettiness to the nose without detracting from a sense of richness and density. Softly engaging plummy fruit is married to the silkiest of tannins, all persist long. Very good.

  • 2022 Château Hosanna

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Medium minus intensity aromas of red plum and berry over black plum, slight alcohol prickle, a little savoury quality, with time cedar and sweet spice. And that red hued fruit note translates to the palate as well, talc textured, woody flavoured, tannins persists with that fruit, slight alcohol warmth intrudes on the finish and leaves things a little too warm for me.

  • 2022 Château Latour à Pomerol

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Red berry, black plums, lots of alcohol warmth here, more chocolate than cedar, sweet spice. Juicy, plenty of cherry, coarse flour textured tannins go hand in hand with the surprisingly fleshy and fresh fruits and a bit of alcohol heat. Big but balanced. Okay.

  • 2022 Château Trotanoy

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Plums, sweet spice, alcohol prickle (again - feeling like a bit of a stuck record here). In the mouth it's rich, ripe, plummy fruits with talc textured tannic burr and plenty of alcohol warmth, touches of sweet spice, cream, caramel in support. Not for me.

  • 2022 Château d'Issan Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

A different bottle. And this also shows that herbaceous quality. Palate much of muchness, lots of tannins here as well dryings things out. Must be a bad batch. FLAW

  • 2022 Château Coutet Barsac

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

Pretty with grapefruit marmalade, sweet spice, cedar, vanilla. Juicy, very sweet - too much residual sugar for the acid for me, less obviously smoky than the last tasting of this wine though its still a little present on the palate. In my defence I was looking for it so perhaps that has influenced me.

Closing

I found the left bank wines more fun than the rights. The vast majority were showing more integrated oak though the alcohol was a bit intrusive on a few of these. The right banks were mostly a bit on the large side for me - 2021 just had a sense of freshness for those Merlot dominant notes that is missing here...Overall good fun though. A note on the d'Issan - I think that it was just a bad batch; a danger if you're effectively getting a bottle sample sent over.
