Introduction

Line up of 8 Pomerol wines from between 1998 and 2010. 2 of them from Lalande de Pomerol.

Flight 1 - 2010 2 producers from Pomerol and Lalande de Pomerol (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Château Haut-Chaigneau 88 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Lalande de Pomerol

"Deep ruby the bouquet is intense with lots of sticky redcurrants, Bing cherry, toasty oak, and cinnamon all spread on some warm brioche.
Intense, the nose is filled with flavour, and the palate follows through with plenty of rich red fruits joined by black olive, pomace, spice and liquorice. The structure has lively acidity, silky to velvety tannins and is medium weight in the body.
A warming, inviting wine with some concentration but not so deep, relying more on its bold fruit interplay.
An approachable, simple but well-made Lalande de Pomerol rather than Pomerol style? Some roasted coffee notes as the wine opened and felt chewier. Fair length the wine flows nicely along the palate.

  • 2010 Château Petit Village 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

"Mid plus ruby, the nose is open and warm with spices and baked red fruits. Expressive, there is mocha, chocolate, raspberry, and tinned cherries on a pancake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
The entry is warming, and there is a noticeable alcoholic heat. Still, it is filled with plenty of ripe fruits that stick to the palate, black olive, blackberry hint, burnt liquorice and underscored by a lemon acidity and sinewy texture. Medium in length, there is a chewy, slightly coarse tannin feeling less fine-grained - More lalande?
Fleshy and sweet, the wine feels sticky and lacks a touch of mid-palate definition."

Flight 2 - 2009 2 producers from Pomerol and Lalande de Pomerol (2 Notes)

  • 2009 Château Haut-Chaigneau 91 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Lalande de Pomerol

"Mid to deep ruby, the aromas are lifted and perfumed with lovely prominent notes of ripe fresh red berries: sticky raspberries, red cherries and maraschino cherries. Less overt new wood, a touch of undergrowth and tertiary elements suggest some age.
Medium to full-bodied, the wine has an intensity of fruit with a breadth of flavour, warmth and velvety, almost plush texture—flavours of chocolate and tilled soil with berries. The tannins have width with a torrefaction element of roasted coffee yet hasn't much depth. Warm alcohol on the finish falls away to a harsher finale that may soften with more time. However, there is still a reasonable definition. "

  • 2009 Château Petit Village 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

"Mid+ ruby with notes of undergrowth, crayon and tree bark before showing red cherries, raspberry and cranberry.
A soft, mouthcoating, rich entry with sweet fruits, warm alcohol and plenty of fruit concentration. Palate staining red fruits with red plum and cherry gives a thickness to the mid-palate. Crushed velvet texture, the wine has secondary notes of bitter chocolate, roasted coffee beans and Xmas spices. The tannins are firm but fine-grained, and the length is relatively long. the wine feels warm and hot and slightly cumbersome and extracted, yet there is certainly an allure to this big-framed wine.

Flight 3 - Pomerol from 2008 to 1998 - Ten years (4 Notes)

  • 2008 Château Gazin Pomerol 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

(Tasted Blind) 92 Merlot; 6 CS, 2 CF. Mid-Ruby, the aromas are intense with ripe red fruits, spices, pencil shavings, toasty oak and chocolate wafer biscuits.
Mid to full-bodied, this is a rich texture wine with plushness and fine-grained tannins. The fruit, chocolate and mocha notes coat the palate, whilst a vibrant acid gives a frame to a fruit-packed spice-edged wine. Superb balance, there is some complexity without the layers of a top estate and a warmth to the close. Elsewise, the wine has excellent concentration, power and density that sit nicely.

  • 2006 Château La Croix de Gay 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

A medium garnet, showing initial signs of ageing. The nose offers penetrating ripe red fruits showing maraschino cherries, ripe softened raspberries and hints of Belgium chocolate. The entry is smooth, intense, and rich, with plenty of ripeness reflecting the year's warmth. It offers a generous mouth-coating texture and a lasting finish on the back palate but the alcohol slightly protrudes - also reasonably extracted. The tannins are rather brash (touch foursquare) but sweet-edged. A good but not top wine.

  • 2006 Château La Conseillante 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Mid+ ruby with deep, penetrating, haunting notes of softened red and black cherries, ripe cranberry and mocha. A wonderful expression that continues to the palate with more black cherry, blackberry and plum notes intertwining with expresso foam. Subtle power, ripe, and velvet texture, this has a fuller body with that sticky, fleshy fruit, Ribena edge and jammy dodgers. There is a slight tar note on the close; some extract on the finish.90+

  • 1998 Château Le Gay Pomerol Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

"Mid ruby, the nose is intense with ripe fruit and lifted elements but starts to detract into a slightly wet cardboard element. The entry shows plush, velvety tannins and succulence, yet the initial powdery notes build towards a dry, wet cardboard feel that suggests some scalping from cork. Pity!
