Introduction

This tasting was a follow-up of a tasting that we did in the wine-club when the 2004 Brunello's were originally relased.
The first tasting was in 2009 and we went through a number of the same wines but had also added several others, including Riservas.
The overall plan was to gauge the vintage evolution and also just taste the best Brunello wines from that vintage.

Flight 2 (4 Notes)

  • 2004 Sesti (Castello di Argiano) Brunello di Montalcino 85 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Cooked fruit flavors but not in a defective way. There is also a bit of manure and the tannins are slightly rough.
The wine seems flabby, old and unstructured. In general, it is just boring and uninteresting.

  • 2004 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino 92 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Young cherry fruit with a lovely acidity and a fine acidity. Perhaps the tannins are still a bit rough. A lovely and classic wine but unfortunately not more than that.

  • 2004 Lisini Brunello di Montalcino 94 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Clean/Pure intense cherry fruit with, for me, a perfect mature balance. It has a lovely piercing young acidic cherry fruit combined with the aged flavors of leather, wet leaves and manure.
A stunning performance and a wine in a very nice complex balance.

  • 2004 Lisini Brunello di Montalcino Ugolaia 93 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Dark sweet cherry fruit but with a lovely touch of green spices and herbs and some menthol/mint.
It still feel very young and almost unresolved. Could certainly need plenty of more time in the bottle to really open up.

Flight 3 (5 Notes)

An extra wine was added due to a somewhat defect of the Pianrosso. The addition, Caprili, unfortunately also didn't show as expected.

Flight 4 (4 Notes)

  • 2004 Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino 93 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

dark plum fruit with some dried hay and licorice but also some soy and vanilla.
Everything is quite balanced and it actually drinks very nicely right now. It seems to be in a good place and I would not save this wine any more. For me, the added aging will only make such a modern wine more disjointed.

  • 2004 Uccelliera Brunello di Montalcino 94 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Impressive and dark cherry fruit and a lovely intensity. Lots of spices with a touch of iron. A very well-made wine that I really enjoyed.

  • 2004 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova 90 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Muted fruit and overall, it is very closed. A huge surprise when this was revealed as this normally is very exciting.
The fruit is "clean" and dark but it doesn't really provide any other impressions. Disappointing and I really hope that the bottle was off or that it is in a weird phase.

  • 2004 Uccelliera Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 97 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Wildly intense dark cherry fruit but still with a lovely and elegant touch. Has some complex spices and especially mint-leaves are prominent.
    Absolutely stunning wine!

  • 2004 Fattoria Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino 95 Points

  • 2004 Fattoria Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 98 Points

It is not fully mature yet but there still have the youthful juicy expression. Loved it!!

  • 2004 Cerbaiona (Molinari) Brunello di Montalcino 99 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Airy and juicy cherry fruit with a weightless feel despite being very intense and so much flavor.
It is difficult to imagine how a wine can be so intense while still maintaining this level of elegance and refinement.
This is a benchmark wine that could easily get the perfect score on any given day. Absolutely stunning!

  • 2004 Soldera (Az. Agr. Case Basse) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 100 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Intense, refined and elegant sour cherry fruit, going towards cranberries.
The complexity is stunning showing black tea, rose hip and vermouth-style spice includes and lovely bitterness in the aftertaste!
There is so much purity and elegance and combined with the flavor depth, this is an absolutely perfect wine!

Flight 6 (4 Notes)

  • 2004 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano 91 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Dark and warm cherry fruit, sweet liquor and a bit to much cabbage. It seems off-balance and slightly weird. This bottle must have been off as I would have expected more from this wine!

  • 2004 Poggio il Castellare Brunello di Montalcino 95 Points

Dark but young and clean cherry fruit with a lovely intensity and structured aftertaste. Showing some age with leather and tobacco.
Very impressive wine and a big surprise in the tasting.

  • 2004 Cerbaiola (Salvioni) Brunello di Montalcino 99 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Juicy and clean dark cherry fruit with an amazing flavor depth.
Stunning intensity and still very young despite the lush profile. An incredible spicy and juicy long aftertaste.
For me, this was definitely one of the best wines of the tasting! Stunning and incredibly refined with an amazing intensity!

  • 2004 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto 96 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Funky nose with some cabbage that went away with some air. There is a good depth of flavor with dark plums but also some prunes.
There is some lovely intensity and acidity but next to the clean fruit from the Salvioni, it didn't stand a chance.
It seems to be in a weird and unstructured phase that I hope it will get out of. It was a bit murky in its flavors and has not aged as well as older vintages of this wine that I have tried.
