Introduction

Catch up with all except Ben who was a last minute sick call

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2011 Schramsberg Vineyards Blanc de Blancs

    USA, California, North Coast

Lemon, yeast autolysis, honey, bread. On the palate it's more green apple with lemon in support, that honey note present here as well. Crisp mousse fades with time, a little lemon curd on the finish. Okay.

  • 2004 Seppelt Shiraz Show Sparkling Great Western

Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Great Western

Black fruits; plums over berries, earth, sweet spice. Crisp mousse fades quite quickly, off dry, liquorice and black olives joins the plums & berries, textured grip is slightly coarse - an impression reinforced by that mousse. A little slightly savoury and bitter quality on the finish. Hmm to okay.

  • 2020 Domaine Huet Vouvray Demi-Sec Le Haut-Lieu

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

Aromas of honey, lemon, a little citrus marmalade note and a touch of fresh herbs, pretty nose. Softly juicy at first, the residual sugar helps with this illusion, citrus, honey, a little textured burr, quite simple. Needs time to gain complexity

  • 2003 Domaine Arlaud Clos St. Denis

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru

Blackberry and currant, a little cherry, leather, earth...Juicy, fleshy, slightly rich, savoury fruit slightly more in the background on the palate with a soft tannic grip, all travels long. with time the wine opens and gains more fruit weight and generosity. Yum

  • 2016 G.D. Vajra Langhe Freisa Kyè

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

Medium minus intensity aromas of red berries; raspberries, slight alcohol prickle lends a little slightly peppery spicy note, smells fresh and fleshy. And so it proves in the mouth, a touch tart, plenty of talc textured tannic grip, similar fruit profile but with dark berries joining on the finish with that alcohol prickle. Okay.

  • 2016 Monte Bernardi Chianti Classico Retromarcia

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

Savoury, slightly meaty, gamey, slightly oxidised notes but I find the alcohol prickle rather dominates the nose, muted red cherry fruit and a touch of herbaceous notes. Medium plus intensity acidity is juicy, red hued fruit again, tight and slightly coarse tannic grip, touch of savouryness, alcohol warmth less prevalent on the palate.

  • 2001 La Spinetta (Rivetti) Barolo Vürsù Vigneto Campè

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Earlier notes apply on the nose...Oak, slightly oxidised, dark fruits, meaty savoury notes, leather. In the mouth it has medium plus intensity acidity, pronounced tannins, meat extract and reduced beef stock. It's quite large, even after 22 years. Only charry meat works.

  • 1959 Monimpex Tokaji Aszú 3 Puttonyos

    Hungary, Tokaji

Earthy, meaty notes, raisins, barley sugar, toffee, sweet spice, slight bruised apple. In the mouth the initial impression of toffee apple made with granny smith, slightly meaty notes here as well, textured burr, straying between sweet and off dry, fresh acidity, leather, earth offer on the finish. Interesting.

Closing

A lovely lunch and, in the time honoured fashion, I nodded off upstairs in the pub we went to afterwards for a cleansing ale
