Organised a tasting for a few friends who wanted to know more about Burgundy. For the whites, did a horizontal of the 2017 vintage which I love for its balance. Tried to do a variety of producer styles and range of vintages to show the difference before and after the spate of recent warm vintages for the reds. Was quite challenging to average out the bottles to be less than USD$100 per bottle/person given how unaffordable Burgundies can be but thought most of the whites and older reds showed well.
2017 Domaine Bachelet-Monnot Puligny-Montrachet 92 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
Linear, tensile citrus fruit. Good precision and superbly balanced for its level. One for acid lovers.

2017 Domaine Comtesse de Cherisey Meursault Bois de Blagny 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
A stark contrast to the Puligny alongside, round and rich with tropical fruit. Even split among the table between this and Puligny. Lacked a little focus for me but others like the broadness of this. Seemed to have lost a little structure since my last bottle 3 years ago.

2017 Domaine Lamy-Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Grande Montagne 91 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Made in a reductive style with high acidity. Didn’t have the most depth but straightforward and pleasurable.

2020 Domaine Joseph Voillot Volnay Vieilles Vignes 89 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
Quite primary and purple-fruited. Seriously structured and needs a lot more time.

2019 Boris Champy Pommard En Boeuf 89 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard
More easy-going than the Volnay alongside, not as unforgiving as a typical Pommard (I don’t think the stereotype is accurate in any case nowadays). Slightly candied, syrupy fruit that I’ve found in his wines.

2018 Henri Jouan Morey St. Denis Vieilles Vignes 88 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis
Dense with blue fruit. Even Jouan didn’t manage to produce an elegant wine in this torrid vintage.

2015 Domaine Bruno Clair Vosne-Romanée Les Champs Perdrix 93 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
Didn’t have a doubt that this would be the best wine and so it proved. Silky texture but with a serious structure behind it; pretty dark red fruit. A crowd favourite because of the elegance that the other reds didn't have. Less open than when I had this three years back, so will leave the rest of my bottles for a while more yet.

2012 Domaine Heresztyn/Heresztyn-Mazzini Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 91 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Textbook Gevrey. Obvious coffee notes on the nose. Smoky, dark red fruit with some earth and iron notes on the palate.

1985 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Côte de Nuits Villages Flawed
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Nuits Villages
Not quite clean and stripped of all its fruit unfortunately.

2005 Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers 89 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Similar to previous impressions. Masculine wine that exhibited the vintage characteristics of robust tannins and immense structure. Not very Chambolle-like.

2008 Louis Jadot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots Domaine Gagey 91 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Slightly advanced colour with some bricking as I’ve found in a number of ‘08s. Quite robust like the Chambolle that came before it but had more finesse and restraint. Showed the shrill acidity of the vintage. A good example of a classically proportioned, understated red Burgundy to contrast against those from warmer vintages in recent times.
