Somewhere in the Northern Burbs, MN
Tasted Friday, March 29, 2024 by rocknroller with 32 views
Robert and Cheryl hosted a dinner at their famous Cat Ranch among the tumbleweed of the northern suburbs. We had a group of 9 for this lovely dinner featuring an Irish Stew from Margaux's Table (RF/CF, KB/VB, GA, JP, IA, G&M). Irene made a killer cake and Jason out did himself to make for a wonderful evening. Thanks to the Frey's for hosting us all.
2008 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Vintage 93 Points

Light gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. Green apple, hazelnut, tart, almond cream, Meye lemon, chalk, poised. Good to know there's a few of these left. They've drank so well, they keep disappearing.

2011 La Chablisienne Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 94 Points
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Following the '12 Fevre Montmains you really see the step up. This has an intense nose that brims with oyster shell minerality, wax, Meyer lemon, golden apple, airy minerality, and honey. The palate is deeper, with more weight and complexity, honeyed, round yet still bright acidity, lemon, lemon zest, ocean minerality, long with subtle oak notes. This has come on from the last time I had it. Really under appreciated --we loved our visit there this past Fall.

2020 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay 91 Points
USA, California, Napa Valley
Light green gold color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. Stone fruits, pear, peach, floral, medium bodied, modest oak, a bit flashy yet elegant. I always appreciate the style at Montelena, there's always a finesse and restraint here. This is good now and will be a bit better in another 2 years. 91+ to 92pts.

2012 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Special Selection Shea Vineyard 94 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
Medium plus ruby red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour. Love this nose as it starts you off with oodles of Christmas spices, cherry, and then a floral potpourri, tobacco leaf, strawberry, and dried earth. The palate is medium bodied plus, with lots of deep dry forest floor notes, tobacco, ground coffee bean, cherry, black cherry and those pretty Christmas spices, with round tannins and a plush mouth feel. Lovely. Thinking this still might get better, 94+(+?)pts.

2005 Bodegas Muga Rioja Gran Reserva Prado Enea 91 Points
Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
Very dark red color. Slow O for a couple of hours. Drank a glass over an hour plus. This still feels rather youthful, full bodied, cassis, lacquer, oaky, moderte tannins, not a lot of finesse.

2019 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 90 Points
USA, California, Napa Valley
Very dark red/purple color with a youthful purple hue. Slow O for an hour. Drank a small glass over an hour. I can't say I've had the regular Montelena CAb in years. This was nice representation of Napa. Building purity and pretty cassis notes in the glass over an hour after it starts off with some young green notes; ripe, full bodied, really soft and round tannins, red berries, with nice oak. This was approachable and quite good for its age.

2005 Sine Qua Non Syrah Atlantis Fe2O3~1a, b & c 96 Points
USA, California, Central Coast
Very dark red/purple color. Decanted for 20 minutes. Drank a glass over an hour. Fantastic nose with savauge, bacon fat, cured meat, aromatic, floral, black raspberry, black berry, black pepper, and licorice. I really love the nose, but the palate is nice too, a bit sharp on the back end, but impressive nonetheless: Big, ripe, palate staining purple fruits, plum, blackberry liqueur, Tart cherry skin, gravelly minerality, so savory, lacquer, long but a touch edgy on the finish. Outstanding.
