Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2007 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Pale yellow. Quite reticent, but opens with a mineral, nutty quality. Fresh and lively, but not light-weight. Nice spicy finish. vg+

  • 1998 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

A deeper yellow than the 2007, but recognisably from the same stable. Nutty, slightly oxidised and less acidic than the 2007. Full bodied. Distinctly Rhone. This is the oldest white Clos des Papes I have had, and while it proves that this wine can have a long life, I am not sure it it proves to be worth it. vg+

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 1999 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Restrained power and sweet fruit. Full bodied, primary fruit, good concentration, and a long tannic/spicy finish. This stood up well beside the 1995. While lacking some refinement and therefore not quite in the same class it is an excellent example of Clos des Papes. dg

  • 1998 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

I have to think that I drank my '98s too early, though this was the weakest wine of the night, and therefore confirmed itself as a disappointment for the vintage. Lighter and more acidic than the others, it has a slightly roasted quality, while lacking the concentration of the '95 or '99. vg+

  • 1995 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Lovely nose. Purity and concentration. Beautifully rich and full, with plenty of tannic structure. Sweet liquorice. Drinking well, though not yet really secondary. This is a lovely wine. dg+

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 1990 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

A powerhouse, and an impressive example of a mature Clos des Papes from a great vintage. The nose is musty, dusty, earthy with a slight air of farmyard. Concentrated liquorice and sweet kirsch. Smoky, slightly burnt fruit. Lovely balance. Drinking perfectly right now. exc

  • 2001 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

This is going to be a fantastic wine. At the moment, it is tight, brooding, concentrated and highly structured. A powerhouse that can be approached now but surely has much more to offer. dg+

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

  • 2003 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

A powerhouse of concentrated sweet fruit. Powerful, dense and full bodied. Recognisably Clos des Papes, but with added muscle. Very ripe, but not roasted. Incredible intensity. Very tannic, spicy and long. Does this reflect a change of style, or the vintage - the latter I think. Best left alone for a long time. exc?

  • 2004 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Cinnamon and sweet black fruit. Full bodied, long, very young and slightly warm. More restrained than the 2003, but with similar brooding power. Not to be drunk for a long time! dg+

  • 2005 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Intense and powerful, all concentrated primary flavours. Vanilla sweet, chocolate and expresso. Very long. Deeply powerful and structured to age. It is hard to read at present, and needs to calm down. Exc?
