Exactly a year after his superb Leoville Barton vertical, Anthony Barton returned with a dozen Langoas from the chateau's cellars to which Linden added a 1904. And just like the Leovilles, they were consistently superb, exhibiting a savoury spiciness, perhaps fleshier and smoother than the Leovilles, but really just as good. The standouts were 1948 and 1982.

Forthcoming spicy blackcurrant nose, concentrated, thick, smooth - delicious even now

Dark, gamey, ripe, cedary already, velvet texture, long - a gorgeous big mouthful

Like the 2001 this was pungent, spicy, a bit bigger and finer, but more reticent today, powerful, with some grip, but beautifully rich and smooth

A bit sickly sweet on the nose, herbal, light, fresh and spicy

1996 Château Langoa Barton 89 Points

The most reticent so far, but substantial meaty claret, a lot of tannin, but plush enough to support it

1990 Château Langoa Barton 91 Points

A quiet nose, some menthol, but a beautifully smooth texture, grip, spice, absolutely winning, but not as long as the start leads you to expect

1986 Château Langoa Barton 90 Points

Malt and spice nose, you can smell the tannin, on the palate it's lean and grippy, but not at all coarse, very enjoyable for an '86

Amazing perfumed floral nose, silky on the palate, light and floaty and it goes on and on - a real beauty

Full on nose, deep, malty good concentration, deep blackcurrant fruit, vibrant - I was very enthusiastic about this. Anthony Barton found it too acidic

I found this vigorous, spicy, scintillating even, but the general view was that this was over the hill

dark, tangy, but very fresh, and the fruit was sweet and deep, harmonious and very long

Still dark, this shared with the 1982, a gorgeously enticing perfumed floral nose, bags of sweet rich fruit on the palate, this was gorgeous
