Introduction

Six of us decided to get together and enjoy a great evening on a rooftop deck in Lincoln Park. Fifteen pounds of lobsters caught in Maine the morning before, A dozen grilled quail, and numerous pounds of beef and pork from Flannery's.

Flight 1 (13 Notes)

  • 2004 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Montrachet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Light straw color. Lemon custard aromatics with a lot of wet stone/mineral and some white/yellow flowers. Very round lemon citrus driven palate with a mineral backbone and great acid on the finish. Beautiful.

  • 2006 Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Deep maroon color. More opulent aromatics than the Georges Jayer Echezeaux served alongside. Ripe dark berry and a bit of underbrush all framed by rich wood spice. Great mouthfeel; ripe fruit, mineral core, great acidity; an all around fantastic showing with a lengthy finish.

  • 2006 George Jayer Echezeaux Élevé et vinifié par E. Rouget

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Consistent notes with the bottle had 4 days ago, except tonight I prefered the regular Rouget bottling to the Georges Jayer. Bright cherry and raspberry, feminine spice, refreshing acidity. Either way you go, both are beautiful wines; it just depends if you want more oak influence or not.

  • 1978 Maison Leroy Mazis-Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

Very much sous bois on the nose with dark red fruits and a bit of spice. Slighty lean palate at first with the mineral notes in the forefront, but after a short while the powerful dark red fruit started to emerge and take over the palate. Great acid structure. After 45 minutes or so, it turned into a quite beautiful wine all around. Delicious.

  • 1995 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Dried cherry and raspberry on the nose with a bit of underbrush and mineral. Somewhat tart cherries and berry on the palate with lots of acidity and very hard tannins on the short finish. Would of probably been a nice bottle to drink on its own, but was easily overshadowed in this night of Musignys.

  • 1996 Domaine Jacques Prieur Musigny

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Primarily black fruit on the nose with some very dark baking spices and with a bit of coaxing some violet flower notes. Very acidic on the palate with tart black cherry. A bit of dark spice on the backend, but overall not very pleasing tonight.

  • 1995 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Very light color here with red fruit, rose petal, and clove aromatics. Hard palate, very lean with lots of mineral and not so much fruit tonight. A tannic finish. Have had better bottles of this within the past year. OK tonight, but not where it should have been.

  • 1996 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Much better than the '95 it was served alongside, but still not mindblowing tonight. Delicate dark red fruits, violets, and spice on the nose with good fruit on the palate and lots of minerality. Nice acidity on the finish.

  • 2001 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Musigny

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Wow from the start. After a few somewhat disappointing Musignys, this was a breath of fresh air. Super seductive nose of sappy dark cherry and berry with immense notes of clove and cinnamon. Great texture on the palate, outstanding purity of fruit and mineral/acid balance. Absolutely Outstanding. Easily the wine of the night.

  • 1999 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Very seductive. Still very primary on the nose with ripe blue and black fruits, intense fragrant flowers, and spice. Fantastic texture on the palate with so much complexity and depth. Wonderful balance of fruit, mineral, and acid. The finish goes on and on. Absolutely delicious.

  • 2003 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

At first it seemed a bit overripe next to the '99, but after a short while, the more subtle aromatics started coming through. Tons of nutmeg with ripe red fruits, cherry cola, and violets. Rich fruit on the palate with a good dose of wet rock and refreshing acidity on the finish. Wonderful. As the night progressed I kept topping up with this one and the '99.

  • 1990 Château Cheval Blanc

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Beautiful red plum and berry on the nose with bits of cocoa, espresso, and some wet leaves. Soft as velvet on the palate with ripe fruits, earth, and a touch of leather. Great finish. Showing very well tonight.

  • 1990 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Popped and poured. From the start an immense nose of manure, dark spice, black plum and berries, and leather. After a short time the manure started blowing off and becoming a bit more attractive gamey quality. Ripe dark fruit on the palate with fantastic minerality. Great acid on the very long finish. A nice way to end the Musigny-a-thon.
