Just seen the results of an annual tasting panel by the consumer magazine, "Which " in the UK. Supermarket labels beat out (three) grandes marques at up to twice the price

One geeky point: they obviously do not use the CT points system, as the Best Buy was rated 82%

Going to a in-law's house today for dinner who are not much wine drinkers so I'm going to bring and try some Loius Bouillot Blanc de Noir cremant. I'm sure it is not as good as a vintage champagne but will try it anyguay.

2012 Louis Roederer Vintage Brut

What did you think of this? We had a bottle recently and I thought it was good but too young and tight. I bought 6 more bottles but probably won't touch one of those for a decade or so.

Jacques Robin NV Champagne Secret de Sorbée

Good NV Champagne around the $40 range but not punching above it's price point for my tastes.

2006 Taittinger Comtes

A little consolation after getting a disheartening prognosis on our 11yo Aussie Shepherd on Friday

So it was Sparkling Saturday, but not happy.

Had a NV Veleta brut rose. I hadnt had one in a couple years since I was in Spain and Nola gifted us a few. Boom, great bottle. It was definitely an older bottle. The lot no. was 10/12 (not sure if this alluded to the year), but even without that, the cork and flavors made it obvious that it was older. Great ripe red fruit, with a burgundy-like earthiness starting to show. Just a really great bottle. Went surprisingly well with pork BBQ with a sweet-spicy-vinegary BBQ sauce.

Eric, that Veleta sounds pretty amazing (and scarce, according to CT)

Last night here, a NV Olivier Morin Crémant de Bourgogne Brut "Tentation”

Talk about a diamond in the rough... probably the best <$20 sparkler I’ve ever had

Kicking off this evening with a really very nice 2015 Pierre Gimonnet & Fils Premier Cru Gastronome Blanc de Blancs Brut. I'm not normally a big BdB fan, but this is excellent for ~US$38.

Followed up the Rhys yesterday with this today: 2015 Solemme Premier Cru Esprit de Solemme Montagne de Reims

For about half the price, about twice as good. That’s a 400% bonus

2012 Graham Beck Brut Zéro

Just received two bottles of this and I wanted to see what South Africa might have to say about bubbly. I’ll be darned if it isn’t quite an excellent knockoff of the typical $30-$50 Pinot-dominant blends from the Northern Hemi counterparts. I hope to see more vintages of this available on the future.

A retrospective Sparkling Saturday Entry:

2018 Erwin Sabathi Chardonnay Brut Steiermark Klassik

Delicious rich and sherberty blanc de blanc, a touch richer and riper than the (also excellent) sekts from Kamptal.

Kicked off this evening with a 2011 Dehours Champagne Extra Brut La Côte en Bosses, which was a decent zero dosage, but nothing special.

Last night was a 10th anniversary party for a friend that I’ve known for 48 years and his wife. He wanted a 2011 bubbly to celebrate, so I recommended that we stick with something reliable. Good ol’ Roederer did the trick. I’ve had the 2012, which is just spectacularly young, but this was very happy to be open now. Not nearly as tense and deep as the 2012 but it had wonderful brioche and light lemon parfait notes. Moral of the story: trust Roederer
