Had a bottle of 2005 Reignac over the weekend. Really too bad---had the potential to be a great wine too!

2009 Domaine des Soulanes (Cathy et Daniel Laffite) Vin de Pays des Côtes Catalanes Cuvée Jean Pull (France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Vin de Pays des Côtes Catalanes) Just slightly corked but the TCA monster is definitely there.  An otherwise nice daily drinker.

last wednesday 2004 kathryn hall cabernet sauvignon sacrashe vineyard. let kelp's experience, this one was just slightly corked, but enough to make me open something else. and it was from benchmark who doesn't replace corked bottles, so i flushed that $ right down the kitchen sink.

Nothing so painful here, but after a very low spoilage/cork rate for most of 2011, I did have issues with a few bottles within just a few days over the holidays:

2010 Field Recordings Wine "Fiction" Fourth Edition (smelled kinda like pickle juice...never got that before)
2006 Tolo Cellars Syrah (plain ol' corked...the winery was out but replaced it with the '06 Reserve bottling)
2004 Domaine Gilles Troullier Vin de Pays des Côtes Catalanes L'esprit du temps (not terrible, but astringent in an 'off' way)

Still waiting for any report of a TCA bottle with screwcap. I know it's possible, but have yet to see it

I had one once. Definitely corked. Don't remember what it was though...

I had one once. Definately corked. Don't remember what it was though...

The bottle of Field Recordings Fiction I mentioned above was screwcap...  I had another Field Recordings wine several months ago under screwcap which was flawed too - badly elevated acidity, but not TCA.

I'd guess that was/is Volatile Acidity (V.A.), bret, which is unrelated to TCA, but is a pretty common wine fault. I found a funny (to me anyway) and informative article about V.A. http://www.aromadictionary.com/articles/volatileacidity_article.html

That was my guess at the time too, although I've never had VA go in quite that direction on me...  Thanks for the article.

How does TCA present in a Sauternes?  I just opened a 2005 Doisy Vedrines and it's rather sharp and a little bitter on the finish.  Almost tastes oxidized.  Drinkable but nothing special in what should be a great bottle.   Corked??

I opened a  '97 d'Arche Sauternes tonight. The cork was green. Smelled and tasted like a horrible stinky cheese wrapped in cardboard left outside on a rainy day. Not the sweet pear/lemon/orange it tasted like when I tried this wine a week ago.

No tasty sauternes for me this weekend.

Well, in the "better service than expected" department, K&L Wines said they'd replace the bottle if I bring it back to the store where I bought it. I wasn't expecting them too, but figured I'd ask anyway. I'm very pleased with their service today.

Any retailer willing to replace a flawed bottle more than 10 years old deserves high praise.

About 5 months ago, a 2004 Papapietro Perry Pinot Noir Mukaida Vineyards.

But there was a happy ending... About a month later I happened to be in Healdsburg CA and I dropped into Papapietro Perry on a Sunday afternoon. Just mentioned the corked bottle of a month earlier and the tasting room person immediately went back into their private collection and found a replacement bottle. I had no evidence of the corked bottle and certainly didn't expect a replacement. The attendant simply looked at me an said "I believe you. It's our pleasure."

Consider that this is not just a run-of-the-mill Pinot; it's a very limited distribution (there's only 22 bottles in the whole CT community), highly rated (CT 93 pts.) and relatively pricy ($75) Pinot. I was back at the winery at the end of October and mentioned my experience to Ben Papapietro (owner/winemaker). He said, "Absolutly, that's our policy."

I can't say enough good thinks about Papapietro Perry.

Has anybody ever tried removing the TCA using plastic wrap? I wonder if it realy works...might at least be better than dumping down the drain.

Wiki link

"One method of removing TCA from tainted wine is to soak polyethylene (a plastic used for applications such as milk containers and plastic food wrap) in the affected wine. The non-polar TCA molecule has a high affinity for the polyethylene molecule, thereby removing the taint from the wine. The surface area of polyethylene needed to reduce the taint to sub-threshold levels is based on the TCA level in the affected wine, temperature, and the alcohol level of the wine.

This can be done at home, as advocated by Andrew Waterhouse, professor of wine chemistry at University of California, Davis, by pouring the wine into a bowl with a sheet of polyethylene plastic wrap. For ease of pouring, a pitcher, measuring cup, or decanter can be used instead. The 2,4,6-trichloroanisole will stick to the plastic. The process is effective within a few minutes.[5]"

Tried it, it removed a lot of the funky flavor, but did not return an equal amount of the fruit that was lost. Could have been other things wrong with the wine as well.
