Only one corked bottle this weekend. It was a 1964 Cheval Blanc, but at least the person who generously provided it got the romantic thrill of removing the cork that ruined the bottle he's been looking forward to sharing for 50 years, instead of having the experience marred by the pedestrian unscrewing of a cap.

And so there will be no misunderstanding, to anyone who opposes screwcaps because the pleasure you derive from the ritual of pulling a cheap chunk of tree bark from the neck of a bottle outweighs the risk of contamination, I am mocking you.

NV Valdivieso Caballo Loco #5, indeed very very loco, all 4 bottles, on one the cork visibly just disintegrated in front of my eyes and on another one there was actual mold growing on the cork underneath the foil - provinence just a little suspect, perhaps ?? ;)

We got two bottles from Wine Exchange back at the end of last year. The other one was lovely...a wine I'd consider buying in quantity if I found a good deal.

I'm fine with screwcaps, but after that bottle showed up as corked, I'd want to get well and truly hammered, regardless of how the booze bottles were closed.

Does $30 sound + free ship sound good?

The pain was assuaged by the exceptional performances of the same person's 1961 Lynch Bages (blind I would have guessed it was the 1982), 1961 Ducru-Beaucaillou (my wine of the year, incredible intensity, complexity, and depth), and 1964 La Mission Haut-Brion (elegant and loaded with the tobacco, minerality, and lawn fertilizer complexity that make Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion my favorite Bordeaux), as well as 1966 Palmer, 1979, 1982, and 1985 Lynch Bages, 1979 Pichon-Lalande (the Pichon was nice, but to my surprise the 1979 Lynch Bages was much better, while the 1985 was off and showing a lot of green and the 1982 was more blocky, youthful, and monolithic than usual), 1990 L'Evangile (the best 1990 Right Banks are so exotic and beautiful but still subtle and balanced, the proverbial steel fist in a velvet glove wrapped in a silk handkerchief, and this is one of the best) , 2000 Leoville-Poyferre, and 2002 Vieux Chateau Certan (from magnum).

It was a good day.

Opened a second and it is fine. Bought a case upon release. Always a bummer to save a wine 10 years or so and then have it be corked

Not 10 years after you buy it Makes one appreciate the second bottle that was fine even more.
If it is a new purchase, you can go back to the wine store or maker but honestly I have only done this once or twice.
In general it is not worth the effort for me.

The Dominique Laurent would hurt a lot more. Sorry to hear about that one Eric.

Dontime, sorry to hear that. Your post did do some good. Had not thought of that wine in a long time. In looking at my consumed wines it looks like I drank a '97 back in 2009. Great label

1996 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne, which was infuriating because it was in beautiful condition (i.e., not premoxed) other than the TCA.

This is why I rarely buy whites pre-2000, since chlorine was predominately used. Now peroxide has taken chlorine's place which leads to less of a chance of TCA.

Holy Cow. Second week of February, and I don't think I've encountered a corked bottle since the calendar flipped.

At least my kids were over for a get together and I was able to use the bottle as an educational encounter.

As part of a "cheap WA reds" blind tasting, 2014 Tenet Wines The Pundit Syrah, (very very very badly corked, worst I've ever seen) and 2013 Substance Cab. Costco was more than happy to take them both back.

That's good MC2.

It doesn't happen tome too often, but a 1999 Jadot Nuit-St.George I purchased directly from the winery was corked.

Last night opened 11 bottles and 2 of them corked. Both bad enough to go down the drain.

Ouch
