I hit 500 bottles briefly last Friday.
That's my upper limit until I have better storage.

So 2018, I told my husband, is the year of slowing down: we'll drink the wines we have to drink instead of the wines we want to drink. We'll be good, we'll be sensible, I assured him.

If this is a New Year's resolution, I hope it’s quickly broken.

Jenise, I don’t know you except from your postings, but this can’t be right. This can’t be what our wine passion comes to. The raison d'être of collecting is to drink the wines we want to drink.

Wine should be a joy, not a burden. If you have too many bottles, sell the ones that you were thinking you "have to drink." Keep and drink and take joy from the ones you want to drink.

I just cracked 800.. i hear the moratorium calling my name. The rate of growth in the last 12 months has probably been a little too swift, but I'm not complaining.

Amusing story. I didnt actually think I was above 2000 for a while. When you look at the CT front page I thought the "Wine Pending Delivery" was included in the "Wine in my Cellar" total. Alas.

I need to try to keep it right around 2k. I really don't have that much more room. I'm planning on expanding my cellar by about 3' x 12', so that should give me some breathing room but I'll need to uprate my cooling unit.

Just passed 3k bottles, and now just over 3k tasting notes and 3k forum posts.

Been a productive year!

At this point, you should probably just buy a house in the burbs, or a studio in Queens to store your wine. Might be cheaper than Domaine, lol.

I thought I was doing okay at 650, had a few slots open for the pop up purchases. But then the Bubble sale at the local before NYE happened, and apparently those bottle don't fit well in the racks and now I have two cases on the floor which is a bad omen for the 1st QTR releases coming up.

I hit 805 yesterday, so I quickly drank a bottle to lower it. I am only supposed to have 365 per Dr. C, one for every day of the year. Unfortunately, I like wine with a few years on it so I need more than just 365 bottles.

There's probably an equation brewing in your post, but it would require too much thinking about the average drinking window per your favorite wines and such.

When friends and family look at my cellar with that bewildered look I quickly explain that I like old Riesling with about 20 years on it and I like to drink about 3 bottles of it a year... obviously I need about 60 bottles of Riesling in the racks. I then explain that I only have 4 bottles of Riesling currently.

Scary thing is with almost 900 bottles in the cellar I sometimes search through what I have and feel that I don't have anything I want to drink?!? I really have a problem

Well I can report with double the cellar size that will only happen half as much. :) I was once near 900, but now there is an extra digit.

Every time I see this thread I get depressed (momentarily, until I open a wine bottle). I have purchased less, but since I have also consumed less, my cellar is actually increasing and is at 1380 and about to hit 1400. Gosh, Mr. Taggert, I am truly depressed.

Not to make it worse, but you're fixing to get your hand shot by The Waco Kid.

Friendly suggestion? I know you and the Princess are going to be retiring in short order. The day both of you do mark it as the last day that you ever buy a bottle of wine again until you finish drinking every last bottle in your cellar. Knowing your consumption rate you'll go well north of a decade before you even have to think about buying another bottle. My two cents worth.

Some of you are making me feel better about the 150 bottles now which may push close to 200. The more I learn, the more I am interested in acquiring. Sigh.

1900?

We are at our lowest count in forever.

Because I suck at Cellartracker these days, I don't have an exact figure. But 2.5 years ago, when we started this "adventure in elder-care", we had 350 bottle. After killing all our wine clubs & curtailing most purchases, we are somewhere around 90 bottles now.

Wonder where tacman's bottle count is these days? Been forever since I checked on him, but last I heard it was 5,000.

Touched 200 briefly last week--before finding out that a half case of Bordeaux I'd ordered was out of stock. Pushes me back down into the 19x territory. Dang it!

1597 in a cellar that maxes out at 1500.

I don't look at moving wine boxes as a chore, I look at it as exercise.

There lies the real problem, I have the same issue. I don’t even drink as much these days but buying hardly stop as I explore and learn.

Hit 2,000 bottles on the number today with my most recent Peter Michael order. Hoping I can maintain the 2K mark but I am not drinking fast enough. Lost 30 days in January because the wife had me on Whole30.

I read somewhere (here or Berserkers) that 5,000 was the ideal cellar size if you like to drink mature wine.

So let me think. We like most of our barolo, burgundy, bordeaux, and vintage champers with 20+ years, Felsina and brunello with 15+, and most other reds at 10+ years...

@ 1.5 case each of mature barolo, burgundy, bordeaux and champers for 20 years = 1440 bottles
@ 3 cases of "other red" (Sicily, Umbria, Spain, Loire, US Pinot and Cabs) for 10-15 years years = 540 bottles
@ 2 case of other whites for 10 years = 240 bottles

plus dessert wines, daily drinkers, and wines that are best after 2-5 years, it gets to be around 2500-3000 bottles.
