Rescued from page 3 this time...

“Night Boat to Tangier” by Kevin Barry. It was good, not very good nor great as many have touted but I finished and somewhat enjoyed this quick read anyway.

I finished "Educated" a week or so ago. Interesting but it wasn't as good as I had hoped.

I'm currently reading "From the Heart" by Laura Bush, so far it's interesting, I think it will get better in another 30 pages or so.

I've also started "Say Nothing" by Patrick Radden Keefe, it's about The Troubles in Northern Ireland. Haven't gotten far enough into it to render a verdict, but I expect a fairly gripping read.

I had the same reaction. It was interesting certainly (if nothing more, than from a slightly morbid fascination with what some people on this planet believe!), but it came across as if it was written by a non-writer...which, obviously, it was.

Just finished Dog Stars by Peter Heller. I loved it. It was brutal at times, but thoroughly engaging. It was also interesting to read in a time like this with a global pandemic on our hands. Very occasionally, his writing style annoys me with its herky-jerky first-person as-spoken style, occasionally compounded with the fact that he doesn't use quotation marks.

I read a similar book, but based on the NY/NJ area, called "Aluminum Bats and Pinelands Vacations".

I kept questioning if this was a work of fiction or an autobiography. I do believe that overall the descriptions of events and attitudes were quite accurate. Very frightening to consider there are people like her father out there.

Try "Far Tortuga" by Peter Matthiessen. All dialogue with no other descriptives.

That sounds pretty brutal to read. Interesting concept I suppose, but I don't find myself eager to read it for the aforementioned reasons. What did you think?

Enjoyed it, but it took a while to get into the rhythm of the book.

“Imperfect Union: How Jessie and John Frémont Mapped the West, Invented Celebrity, and Helped Cause the Civil War” by Steve Inskeep. Pretty interesting book. I’ve seen the name Fremont many times in my travels, particularly throughout the west from New Mexico up through Northern California and points between. It is nice to get some background on the name and why so many places are named Fremont. I didn’t know the full story beforehand. Worth a read, particularly if you’re into American history.

“Think Like a Pancreas: A Practical Guide to Managing Diabetes with Insulin” by Gary Scheiner. I have type 2 diabetes. I’ve wanted for quite a while to learn more about diabetes, the effects of diet and exercise, highs and lows and such. Although this book is written primarily oriented towards living with type 1 diabetes utilizing insulin to control your diabetes it is chocked full of type 2 information as well as diabetes information in general. A dry read particularly if you’re not interested in the subject matter well worth the garnering of information in this short format book.

I like his collected short stories best I think.

He's got real skill with language, that's for sure, something very Irish/Joycean in his prose.

I liked Educated, which I'm pretty sure is an autobiography. To me it seemed less plot driven than a replication of the glacial process of realizing your most core beliefs are BS. It's no surprise so few people really change their minds.

“Firing Blancs” by Peter Stafford-Bow. The continuing adventures of Felix Hart, the intrepid wine buyer and wine minstrel of the Felix Hart novels. In this third installment of the series he returns to the winelands and townships of South Africa. Chocked full of humorous episodes highlighted by Peter Stafford-Bow’s witty prose, this installment is a thoroughly enjoyable addition to the series. Recommend as a quick, humorous read. Particularly if you’re seriously into wine and need to laugh a little.

“My Vanishing Country: A Memoir" by Bakari Sellers. Good book. Well written. I enjoyed it. Dovetailed nicely with current events in America in 2020. Particularly around the Black Lives Matter movement.

My Mom grew up in Lynchburg, VA which is close to the small town of Bedford. There is a D-Day memorial there because so many Bedford natives lost their life that day.

About halfway through Inside Bordeaux by Jane Anson. Very interesting and am so impressed by how many estates are doing detailed soil studies to match varietal to soil, and how many estates have moved to sustainable farming. This includes the small, unclassified estates as well.

The Stand - the actual book. I often find King's writing to be somehow deliberately dumbed down, but not this book. I was reminded about it by the really bad CBS miniseries that just came out -- unwatchable (the old one from 1994, in contrast, was good).

If you are still interested in the subject, I would highly recommend the book "Neptune" by Craig L. Symonds...for that matter, I'd highly recommend ANYTHING by Symonds, who if I recollect correctly is a professor at the US Naval Academy now. I typically listen to Audio Books and the Audible versions of both Neptune and his book "Battle of Midway" are some of the best documentary books I've ever read/listened to. So much great detail...
