Open That Bottle Night (OTBN)

It was originally started with the realization that many wine collectors save "special" bottles for an occasion that may be few and far between. So the founders of it (wine writers for Wall Street Journal or NY Times if I recollect) set the last Saturday in February as OTBN...meaning you wanted your occasion, here it is. Or in Nike speak...Just Do It!

So my thought was, Brad and I had many special bottles we bought and planned to drink together, and I'm going to open some on the 16th in his memory. I don't want this to be exclusive of anyone so open what you will...your Secret Santa gift, a Bottle in Common with Brad's cellar, a bottle you are holding for a "special occasion" or just pop a cork and make a post. No drama. Just friends and wine.

I would give it a little air. It has a reductive quality that needs to blow off. I would just pour enough into a glass to show the shoulder. Half an hour should be plenty.

Many thanks.

Nice CdP.

I like the common thingy as well. Turns out we have about 15 bottles but the one Cab we share is a 2009 Force Majeure Cabernet Sauvignon Collaboration Series V Ciel du Cheval Vineyard.

Mr. Drycab and his lovely bride Lesley chatting with MtPisgah while Mindmuse sniffs away in the front and our Charleston host, S1, stands just off camera. My photography sorta sucked by this flight.

Just found this one...

Brad and Lesley seated with Dr. C in the foreground at one of our Charleston wine dinners. That effusive, gregarious fellow is indeed worthy of this memorial.

The common wine thing is a great idea; I didn't really expect I would have anything, but was surprised to find we have the 2012 WA CT Barrel Project syrahs and a couple of Rasa wines from 2010, Creative Impulse and QED. I have had the QED several times, but have yet to try the Creative Impulse, so will go with that.

I never had the pleasure of meeting drycab, but love the idea of raising a glass to someone who meant so much to this wonderful community. I just checked our wines in common and actually have 52 wines in common. Most of these bottles are currently at offsite storage so it looks like we will raise a glass of the 2007 Checkerboard. We are traveling to Atlanta for our niece's college graduation, so will stow the bottle in our luggage and toast to drycab's memory and to the bright future of our beloved niece.

13 wines in common. Will probably go with a 2010 Rasa Vineyards QED.

Missing my buddy something fierce today. Looking forward to Friday night...

The holidays can bring on bittersweet memories....

We are in, for 12/16 or 12/17. Chose a bottle that sort of blends Brad's taste with my personal style. Will match with comfort foods, yet to be decided. We will surely toast Brad. His history is that of a great guy who contributed to much to his friends' life and also to CT.

Thinking of you.

Take care!

I pulled these from my offsite yesterday:

2007 Checkerboard Vineyards Napa Valley
2008 Lillian Winery Syrah Blue Label
1985 Graham Porto Vintage Port Blend

Need to plan a menu. Having a few good friends over.

1985 Graham Porto Vintage Port Blend

Open that a day or two before you plan on drinking it. Strain and filter the (somewhat copious) sediment, then decant it for a couple hours. It's still VERY young.

Don't know your level of Port awareness (and you probably don't need this advice), but I often run Vintage Port through a strainer first into a pitcher and press out all the juice from the goop left in the strainer. Then I pour the pitcher's contents through a coffee filter into the decanter to remove the finer particles.

'85 is a helluva bottle. It might end up being the best post-1960 vintage of last century once it has the proper age.

I appreciate the insight! I was planning on decanting it through a filter, but hadn't considered needing to open it in advance.

Friday is turning out to be a not very feasible day for me for this at all so I may very well fire up the grill Th night, fire up some big meat and be the 1st to toast Brad, very possibly with among other things my CT SS '03 Harlan The Maiden, a bottle that Brad would very much have approved of. The way my guessing is going in that game this year it looks distinctly possible that I will have drunk that beautiful wine even before knowing who sent it....

After a bit of sleuthing (it seems much CT sleuthing these days!) it seems we have settled on a bottle for Friday night's tribute. Getting it sent in advance to the hotel in Vegas as we're not arriving until rather late that evening.

There is a Total Wine which seems to have the easiest online ordering system. In their Cali cabs there's not a ton of overlap with Brad, but we did find a Blankiet Paradise Hills. 2005 available to be shipped. This is a wine Brad had already consumed from his cellar so generally fitting the theme.

Won't be quite as elaborate as some others, but at least something....

Yes sir! I did. I was in the hospital Monday through Wednesday. Then recovered at home the next 10 days. Worked part time the next week. Full time this week. I still have pain in one specific spot where the surgeon did a number on me apparently but for the most part I'm back in the saddle.
